I feel like the amp modeller built into the MPC will do me fine for what I need provided I can get a loud enough signal in in the first place.
So who is buying the Keys 37?
With latest price drops Iād rather get a MPC Key 61 in addition to my Live 2 Retro.
The Key 61 is much more temting for me because it has 4 GB of RAM (3 GB usable) and while there is no official information on the MPC Key 37 yet, I think it will only be 2 GB (1 GB usable).
Plus I like and need SATA-SSDs for my Samples and Expansions and I really hate the red color scheme, though I donāt know if I could resist if they make a Key 37 Retroā¦
Have wanted a similarly sized keyboard on an MPC for a long time. Will keep my original Live, which is in full working order and runs all of the Plugins without any issues, and will also be buying this new one.
Some things look nicer than others but I donāt get hung up on colours. Itās a tool to make music on. If, however, the red did irritate me, Iād just get a retro skin for it when theyāre released too.

Iām thinking thatās the new minimum - their entire business model seems to be based on making more revenue per customer by selling software and why limit yourself to only being able to sell a subset of your plugins just because the hardware has too little ram?
Edit: I stand corrected, the MPC One+ has only 2 GB of ram.
The one plus is still 2gb I believe, they expanded internal memory to 16gb but the ram is the same. Only the key61 and the special edition have 4gb ram.
Fingers crossed the 37 gets the full ram compliment, seems like it would make sense since itās a matter of selling a smaller footprint device in the same category, as mentioned earlier youād think theyād be wanting to capitalise on the large keygroup products they have in their catalogā¦
Just a little update on the above. Grabbed a Scarlett 2i2 and it works perfectly although I do wish the MPC let you have separate input and output devices simultaneously as not having the internal speaker is a bit of a shame.
Howās the bass sounding through it?
Question out of curiosity: how does an MPC handle switching a track between midi, internal/plugin synth? Does it keep the notes you sequence and it is just a case of switching where the notes go, or does it mess up a track to do that?
Like, if I wanted to sketch out some notes using an internal synth and then later send that as midi to an external synth, is that easy peasy or a chore? Can a track send both midi and notes to an internal synth?
Yeah it keeps the notes in place.
Regularly used it to swap in external instrument and plugins. Also you can route another track to anotherās midi, so you could have one midi sequence triggering a plugin and an external instrument. Rarely used that part but a nice touch.
Thanks. That is great to know for the future.
If you go the interface route-then the interface takes over all sound and input/output duties. You lose the speaker, and all the connections on the back of the live 2-they not picked up by the interface and you have to use whatever inputs/outputs are on the interface. I feels this turns the Live into a USB controller and I could have bought one of their cheaper controllers. It is worth doing if you hooking up 16 or 32 channels.
I got a Art USB dual-pre, which is powered by USB from the live 2 and plugs into the inputs on the back. I can still use the speaker and the other inputs on the back. It was less than £100 (found for about £70), small and I can input my guitar and any mic (at a good level-why the MPC do not a mic pre is beyond me). It seems okay for the job and it is very portable.
Art also do a single channel pre, which is USB powered and has good reviews for about £120-I would have gone for that but it was out stock when I was looking.
My favorite things about my Live 2 were the speaker and the battery. And I had the retro, so looks, as well. The 37 fails on all three and not in the order I listed. No dice.
I realize akai means red, but itās not like theyāre clavia or something, theyāve never had a public expectancy of red from their customer base and even the people who like and prefer the read donāt request the color, not that Iāve ever seen (surely someone has)⦠they are just making a bunch of people have to go through the inconvenience of putting on skins⦠if anything they lose more sales from people who take a pass on the red units than they gain from people who werenāt going to get one and then decided they want one because itās redā¦
who knows, maybe this red unit will be different and their sales will quadruple just because itās red⦠but I havenāt seen any antidotal evidence to suggest that⦠I definitely wonāt get one, but I would have gotten a red mpc mini if that is the only color they released one in, and I have seen many people express the desire for a mini as opposed to none for thisā¦
one of the cool things about akai though in my opinion is that for those people who actually want the mod controls on the right side of the pads or actually want a red mpc etc⦠akai is lookin out for them and is just about the only game in town, Iām happy for those people
Anyone who thinks a container full of black plastic shells isnāt currently on a slow boat from china is not smelling what the Rock is cooking.
And letās all hold our breath for the TimbaLand special hot pink and neon green with sprinkles edition . Brought to you by Loopmasters!
If it was purple and green Iād buy it in a heartbeat.
