MPC Thread : MPC Live - MPC X - MPC One (Part 1)

Yes and if required you can map things differently.

I can’t quite wrap my head around it. I’ve managed to map each pad to a chromatic note, easy to play from an external keyboard, but how can I address a single pad with multiple MIDI notes? Any tips?

The 16LEVELS Tune (chromatic) mode seems to send out SysEx messages instead of note-on messages.

Thanks! I’m thinking of sequencing the MPC externally. But what you say might imply it’s not possible… :face_with_monocle:

Use keygroup programs for that they respond to midi notes, the drum program pitches are not played with notes, the pads write tune offset automation instead. Keygroups are like traditional samplers with samples mapped across a midi keyboard.

Okay, thanks everyone! Keygroups it is.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to have different scales/roots in pad perform mode on different sequences? It seems to be universal over the entire project from what I can tell.

My workaround is to record the MIDI of an idea with one scale or chord progression and then change it to something else when I switch to another program.

Yeah that seems to be the way. Hopefully they can make it per sequence in the future.

So there’s one thing that bugs me with my MPC Live and it’s not a ā€˜deal-breaker’ or any of that privileged nonsense. It’s probably an issue with my internal SSD. But when I export a recording made in the Looper and save to my SSD the PROGRESS dialogue box never disappears. It takes forever for the bar to fill (sometimes it never does) and most of the time after leaving it a couple of minutes the file has actually saved where I wanted it. But sometimes, especially if I become impatient, the file doesn’t save at all.

Does anyone else have this issue?

This is often the case when exporting from the looper or sampler. Use the KEEP button instead.

I recently discovered this video featuring Mr G:

It has so much energy and looks like he’s having a good time performing. It appears that he’s sending individual outs from the MPC to his mixer. How is he likely using the MPC? Setting up lots of sequences (i.e. each sequence is a ā€˜song’) and then somehow transitioning between them?

Yeah, it’s great this set.

He uses a Mackie mixer with built in fx and takes 8 outs from the MPC.
I’d guess he just keeps all the tracks lined up consistently across sequences and switches between them. Amazing how much you can do with that set up, and I really dig how’s he’s consciously committed to that rig for 10+ years.

Or he might have one massive sequence with tons of tracks and he just mutes/unmutes them to evolve the live set, this would allow him to somehow transition between tracks. I’m not a fan of that type of workflow but it is mighty flexible

If you watch him he spends 95% of his time on the mixer… most MPC action is on the jog wheel in between tracks. I’m not familiar with the MPC 2000 but I’d assume he’s swapping seqs.

I like how he refers to his notebook too, man after my own heart there.

One of my favorite live sets of all times, super inspiring. Just prooves you don’t need much if you’re feeling the music.

This setup inspired my own live set, which is an MPC One, TR8S, and one monosynth. You can spend lifetimes on this setup alone…

Mutes on the MPC

And also performing on the mixer with mutes, sends, etc

Is that so… So would it be better to KEEP the sample then export it to my internal SSD that way? The Looper is amazing but this issue is driving me nuts! I conducted a Google search but couldn’t find anything on the subject.

This is why I still use separate tracks per drum sound even on the new MPC. Track mutes is the classic MPC workflow for me, and what he does a lot here.
