I’ve read what I thought were the relevant parts of the manual and skimmed other stuff, but I still can’t figure this out. On my MPC One, I want to assign individual drum synth plugins to their own pads so that I can finger drum the pads. Eventually, I want to trigger those pads via an external Zendrum controller’s MIDI triggers, assigning one trigger per pad. For now, though, just the onboard pads, which have turned out to be much more dynamically responsive than I expected.
I’ve assigned samples per pad, no problem, but the drum synth plugin seems to work differently. When I choose a multi, it fills eight pads as expected. I want to now use my seven remaining plugins to fill up all but one of the rest of the pads, which is what I can’t figure out. When I add a single drum synth plugin, it gets mapped with various tunings over all 16 pads. I expected there’d be a way to assign it to one pad as you do with samples then tune it (and adjust its other parameters) as needed. When I go to add a second drum synth plugin, though, it replaces the first one over all 16 pads. I was expecting to be able to add one drum synth plugin seven times over and then one multi, but clearly I’m still confused about the workflow. Can someone give me a clue?
So I my workflow is create 8 programs, right? And when I’m done, each program will play in its one assigned pad (8 for the multi) so that I have 15 available simultaneously to play both from the pads and via my external controller. Do I have this right?
ADDED: Apparently you can’t simply assign a drum synth plugin to a pad, right? It works when I put each drum synth plugin on its own MIDI channel, and then set the MIDI input channel in the track view (and then arm the tracks). I have to use 8 MIDI channels to set up a drum synth drum kit with an external controller? I mean, I can do that, but I want to make sure it’s the most efficient way.
By the way, I’ve found the MIDI notes for the multi: C -2 to G -2. Unfortunately, I only have my Sensel Morph with me at the moment, and its lowest possible note is C# -2—a ridiculous shortcomiing. In any case, I wish the MPC would let me remap the multi’s MIDI notes, or at least repeat them at higher octaves.
Imho one of the coolest things on Maschine is that you can freely mix & match synths, samples, effects etc. per pad … you can create a kit that consists of a mix of samples, synths etc. which is supercool
The MPC’s onboard pads aren’t bad, but it looks like I can only use the pads to trigger one program at a time. It’s flexible enough for drum kits, I guess, if you’re satisfied with samples-only patches. In my case, I can get that same flexibility as Maschine if I set the MPC up to be triggered by my external percussion controllers, which are better than the pads.
