Trying an MPC Live…
The pads dont seems as nice as the older boxes.
And def not as nice as Maschine. But i read otherwise.
I find they double trig, or dont trig at all sometimes.
Ive played with sens. and thresh. with little to no change.
I was hoping for that silky responsive pad like older akai or maschine. But got something more like the AR.
To MPC users…is this how they are or could this one be a dud?
I get the odd double trigger, but I’ve figured out that my technique is to blame: i.e. it only happens when I let my fingers rest on the pads after each hit, which can cause a bounce. By contrast, on the Tempest this is not an issue, which is where I developed the habit.
As far as missed hits are concerned, I can’t say that I’ve ever hit a pad with any measurable force and had it fail to trigger. There is a small gap between the bottom of the pad and the sensor though, so there is a minimum amount of pressure required if the pad is to make contact. That said, if the velocity range is set to full, a quick double trigger can make it seem as though a hit didn’t register, if the bounce chokes the first hit at the lowest possible velocity.
Fat pads (or corks) will eliminate the space below the pads and make them more sensitive; but you’ll still get double trigs if you’re letting your fingers rest on the pads between hits.
This is just my experience of course, but I doubt there’s anything wrong with your MPC per se. And for the record, I’ve grown to like the MPC’s pads better than my Tempest’s.
I love the MPC Live pads, but like all instruments that emphasize the tactile experience, they take some getting used to, depending on where you’re coming from.
Like @JohntheSavage I’ve been on a Tempest for awhile, and prefer the MPC pads. They would appear to be more stiff, but it’s because they allow for more depth and nuance, once you get to know them.
what you talking about? I love the pads on my MPC live. Better even than my fat pad upgraded MPC 1000, very nice response. Maybe you have a defective unit?
I couldn’t angree more with you. I have also been confused with everybody praising the pads on the MPC Live and I wonder:
have they tried the Maschine pads, or Ableton push 2?
if so, do they use the MPC Live for finger drumming? Do they play with multiple fingers in multiple pads - “pinky” finger included - or use 2 fingers per pad - as I see in a lot of videos.
I am not a superfingerdrummer by any means but I did learn some finger drumming techniques and love to press smoothly and get a sound, instead of banging on the pads.
I wouldn’t say though, it’s as bad as rytm, but maybe between rytm and my maschine studio.
Ps- not criticizing anybody’s way of playing pads, just noticing that for finger drumming, my maschine Studio is much smoother than the MPC Live
Correct me if I am wrong but isn’t there a way to make the velocity curve more sensitive on the mpc live? That could make it similar to a maschine finger drumming style
Having owned a MPC 2000/1000 and playing a Live ill say the older MPC’s feel more silky and gummy, the Live are for sure more stiff but not in the same way the RYTM is.
I said “more like” not “like” the rytm. Those boys is STIFF! I hear the banging of the AR against the table more than the sounds. (love it tho)
I had just read that they were nicer than Maschine, which i totally disagree with (if stiffer than masch is the norm). But…reading stuff on the net is nothing compared to actual contact. Everyones got their own personal prefs.
I personally dont have a preference as long as the velocity is decent or adjustable. I did try a friends beat up MPC and the pads were too loose and gummy to play accurately, id change them if it got to that point.
…i can only rant here…got a mpc from 1995…a mpc 1000 and a mpc 2500…all with no tabledisco factor of course…and that were pads for real…once they were not blinking…never touched the ni rip off though…skipped that whole akai mpc’s are just oversized back rip off controlers now…
andsince they built truu music instruments again, finally, somebody must have told them, i jammed a bit with the live model…and, well, what can i say…akai is never getting it real again for me…
Two weeks on melodics should recalibrate your hands?
You can configure the MPC as the controller for the app so essentially you’ll be practicing on the hardware. I’d advise against spending any money on the advanced lessons, unless you already know you’ll need em. The free lessons is a good start IME
For the record, Haynes is coming from a Maschine background here, and he has been known to use just about every other pad controller on the market too:
At any rate, if you can watch these vids and still blame the pads, well… (wink).
so…ive already blamed myself. but now…NOW I OFFICIALLY blame myself.
I was reading the manual tired…and TOTALLY misunderstood what I was reading.
Sensitivity: least 1 < - > 16 most. [made sense]
Threshold [force]: least 1 < - > 16 most…
well I got Threshold backwards. and had increased the value expecting it to require less force.
so ya…I fucked up. I’ve just tried the setting S: 12 and T: 4…DREAMY
so 100% user error. the pads are NICE.
thanks for the vids…freakin TITE!
[I CAN blame the pads for something…they get gross WAY too easy. I’m a neat freak…and fuck…these are just so damn gross. the clear pads look really cool may consider them should I get this thing. but thats all I can fault em for. again, knowing how to adjust CORRECTLY set me straight. awesome pads]
