MPC and OT Midi Mayhem

So I just pulled the trigger on an mpc2500 to cover my poly midi base. I am wondering how best to route them in symbiosis.

I love the OT sequencer, I still want it in the picture but when it comes to poly I want the MPC to take over. I’d like the OT to remain clock master. Here’s my gear:

OT
A4
V-Synth (which is also acting as my controller)
Ambika
Modular
MPC

I plan to add a bigsky in december too. How best to route the midi. I’d like the option of routing the OT sequencer to the synths as well as the MPC.

Off the top of my head, you should be OK with a simple set-up:

VS Out to OT In.
OT Out to MPC In1.

MPC Out1 to Ambika In.
MPC Out2 to BigSky In.
MPC Out3 to A4 In.
MPC Out4 to VS In.

A4 CV/gate sequences modular.

[You have the option to chain the BigSky to the Ambika and thereby free up one MIDI Out port on the MPC for, ahem, further expansion.]

You will need to do a little adjusting of settings on the OT. From memory, in the MPC you can route the OT’s MIDI output as well as the MPC’s sequences to all four of the MPC’s MIDI Out ports.

Decide early on whether you’re using JJ OS instead of the Akai OS.

That should let me still sync pattern changes with the OT and A4 right?

Also need the midi from the v synth for recording poly to the Mpc sequencer. Need to read up on how midi is routed inside the Mpc.

I don’t own an A4, but I believe that if you have the PRG CH RECEIVE channel set to respond to the OT, then it will be just fine.

You should be able to use the MIDI Out from the VSynth if the OT channels are set-up correctly. Failing that you could add a connection from OT MIDI Thru to MPC MIDI In2 to the configuration suggested above.
On the MPC you would set the ‘Soft Thru’ setting to something like ‘OMNI-ALL’. This echoes the MIDI inputs to all four MIDI output ports. I believe that it works the same way in both the Akai OS and the JJ OS (but I can’t definitively check right now).

Thank you. I’ll let you know how it pans out. Hopefully should arrive on the weekend so I can get everything hooked up nicely.
