Just canvassing opinions on this pair. The main idea is to throw some CV at my Subharmonicon (especially an LFO), use the mini keyboards for occasional leads or drones over the top of my Digitakt compositions, and to sample some meaty one-shots into DT. The W-01 is about £185 new (with warranty and the option to return if I change my mind) and the M-32 is about £400 second hand and I’ll probably have to add another £50-60 for a two-tier stand. So, there’s a big price difference. The W-01 ticks all my boxes but seems a bit flimsy and the knobs will be harder to dial in compared to the M-32, whereas the M-32 has the bonuses of proper midi input (from DT) and the sequencer that I might use in random mode from time to time. Anyone have one/both? Thoughts? Feelings? Pro and cons? Etc etc. Thanks!
I went through the same decision a few months ago, Mother 32 or one of the other Moog units. Then I started thinking about all of the Moogs I’ve bought over the years and the poor quality and hassles I had. MemoryMoog with lots of issues, Voyager in the middle of the batch with bad boards, MoogerFoogers that were crap construction. I could go on and on. If I am going to get Behringer quality from Moog, why not pay Behringer prices. Bought a Arturia MiniBrute 2S and a Behringer Neutron. Been very happy with them.
Mother 32 is a beauty.
Wonderful sound and top build quality in my opinion. And lot‘s of useful patch points.
Many complain about the sequencer to be too fiddly but I liked it…
Werkstatt sounds great in the videos too. It’s like a little version of the mother without the sequencer.
I would get the mother and put the two one of the two tier stands. Nice ergonomics having the patch fields on top of each other
I’ve had both
They sound really different
Werkstatt, bubbly
M32, strident
Both keyboards suck, m32 with midi and DT keyboard is my suggestion
M32 is packed with utility “modules”
Which I think is more what you are after.
Lfo’s?
1 dedicated and the vco. You could also rig the sequencer to do this I reckon.
I bought the 32 because the werkstatt wasn’t enough.
Buy it used. The used prices are great
As far as the stands go, I wouldn’t buy it.
You can use the end cheeks to make a stand. It’s sturdier than it looks. I used it this way for a few months.
Werkstatt sounds phenomenal, I don’t find it fiddly at all. Lots of patching/hacking potential.
Never tried a M32 but it sounds very nice too.
For what it’s worth, you can easily fit different knobs to the WS pots and improve the user experience no end.
I love mine. In the time I’ve had it I’ve also owned a Minitaur, Little Phatty, Sirin and Grandmother but the only one that’s still here is the WS - partially because it’s so enjoyable and immediate to mess with and partially because it’s a ridiculous cheap way to get the Moog sound. If I didn’t have one and were getting one now I’d go secondhand so that I was less worried about modding the switch to turn off the VCO when the external input is in use. It’s the cheapest way to get that ladder filter and you get a free synth with it
:
All that said… a secondhand Microbrute offers a load of CV-based fun for under £150, which is why, despite not remotely needing one, I picked one up a few months ago
Edit: I got the vinyl skin when I had the Sirin because it made me chuckle that they were odd siblings but I still really like the look
looks very nice
Thanks for all the input so far. I think I’m coming down on side of the M-32, simply because it can be permanently attached to the SubH and be less of a pain when patching the two together because of the patch bay alignment. The W-01 would be a bit more of a hassle, especially as I do most of my production work on a giant cushion in bed haha.
M32 sounds really nice, very useful kit and easy to (ab)use. Would not mind a second one!
Might get a werkstatt. Didn’t know it’s only 200 euro… It sounds amazing
I don’t know how midi implementation is on a subh but can’t you just connect your digitakt to it so you can send notes, and lfo with midi ?
Looks fantastic. Where did you get the replacement pots? I’ve been pondering a WS for a while now that they are so reasonably priced.
I’m pretty sure they were a couple of quid for a bag of 10 from AliExpress. The big one for the oscillator tuning was something I had already from somewhere but the little ones were almost certainly from Ali
There is some midi implementation but it’s a bit fiddly and not as intuitive as sticking patch cables here and there to see what happens
Ah ! Too bad !
