Morningstar ML10X matrix switcher

https://www.morningstar.io/ml10x

Just released today.

Hot Damn! I’ve been waiting on this one awhile. I don’t know how they got the price so low for what it does.

You can configure basically 12 ins and 12 outs in numerous series and parallel configurations. Can’t wait!

FYI - These are in stock right now on Morningstar’s website if anyone is interested. I just ordered one for my pedalboard setup.

The owner (?) stated in the morninstar forum:

"We’ll be stocking our EU distributor soon, should be shipping out by next week.

Unfortunately, quantities are limited. The global chip shortage is still affecting production. The delivery dates for the processors just keeps getting pushed back (Just FYI, we have back ordered the processors since beginning of 2021 when we saw lead times were increasing, and they’re still back ordered until now). So the sad truth is the ML10X is going to be out of stock after this new batch.

We’re exploring options on how to get around this…"

Oh cool, I’ll probably wait for a later batch but have been wondering about the lag between the announcement and availability.

Hello all, just got this beast of utility but I’m wondering if anyone else is joining the party

Not really, you have 1 stereo in, 1 stereo out and 5 stereo loops for effects.
It’s not as flexible as a Matrix Mixer, but still useful if you want to use different pedals on a single audio source.

The editor can be demoed here: https://editor-mkii.morningstar.io/ml10x$
The manual is here: User Manual

Seems the input is also stereo?

This looks interesting to put on a mixer / audio interface FX send / Return for quick selection of diff FX.

Any negatives using it this way?

Rethink that. I’m using it with multiple stereo devices in, effects loops, and a few stereo outs.

It’s not as flexible as a matrix mixer, correct. Except for the final output, it averages rather than sums, so you have limited parallel summing that can happen.

With creative routing, it’s much more than you’ve described.

Thanks. I’ve had a go in advanced mode.
Seems to work for simple desktop use if you send everything to the stereo output or with a small mixer if you set end of chain effects to the return channels on that.
Otherwise you quickly run out of IOs.

Pros:

  • Using the editor is straightforward
  • Naming the nodes helps
  • You can save your routes as presets
  • Merge or sum 2 signals per final output
  • Can use 18VDC power supply to reach 10vpp

Cons:

  • No on-device routing when using advanced mode
  • No loop disabling yet when using advanced mode. It’s in beta
  • Every possible route needs to be saved for quick changes via presets. Modifying routes in the editor all the time is not convenient (yet?)
  • 16 channels would have been better

Alternatives in the same price range:

  • Erica Synth Matrix Mixer. On device route editing, 3 attenuation levels, no editor, same price
  • DF Audio Minibay. Uses patch cables, no editor, no presets, cheaper
  • Mini Effect Gizmo X. 1 more loop, lower audio levels, no screen, less flexible routing

Love your assessment!

I think use case is a huge consideration. I really wanted to go with the Erica synth matrix mixer, but it’s massive! The relatively small footprint of the ML10X was the clincher for me.

Great points on the advanced mode and on-device limitations. True for me: I created several patches for my use cases, and treat all my routing needs as a preset patches.
