Moog Messenger

Oh, I was spot on. Do I win a Messenger?

Probably my favorite video on the subject. Nice sounds.

Oh yeah! Great performance and sounds. Thanks for sharing.

IMO - a mediocre sounding Moog.

I really like it and if I hadn’t been forced to replace my laptop this week I’d be all over it.

That is what I think (am afraid about)

I played with it yesterday at Superbooth. First impressions are it is a similar size and shape to a Minilogue XD. Sounds like my old Roland SE-02. Might try again today.

That’s pretty good! I haven’t used a Take5/Teo5 in person yet, but they always looked a bit too big for what they’re going for, Minilogue has the ideal size for that kind of synth imo.

Well this thing sounds great. Pity about the wall wart, but I get it. Wish it was at least a locking barrel like the matriarch.

But other than that I have no gripes. It looks and sounds good and is priced right. EOL’ing the Sub25 makes a lot of sense because that would be a hard sell with this available.

On the Minimoog Model D, you can use noise to modulate the filter etc, and it all adds to the analogue fluff.

Looking at this unit, though, it doesn’t appear (from the panel at least), that the noise can be used to modulate anything at all, but hopefully I’m wrong about that.

Can someone please confirm whether this is the case, whether the noise can be used to modulate, and if so, what are the destinations for modulation by noise?

Here’s the manual :

Yep. Lisa’s work is kind of the gold standard for seeing what a modern Moog can do. I like it better now.

Sounds like there are some effects softening the sound a little, in a good way.

@Tchu
I checked it, but I cannot tell whether it’s just a crappy manual, whether the rep was misleading, or whether I misunderstood.

I can’t remember which video it was, but if I recall, the rep seemed to suggest that modulation assignment is a case of pressing a button and twiddling your chosen knob affair. But in that case, how do I assign Noise as a modulation source?

There’s not much going on in terms of modulation sources according to Page 12 of the manual.

I mentioned the ā€œassignā€ options above. as you say, there are a handful of modulation sources that you can assign to modulate a control on the panel. the sources include: LFO1, keys, ENV’s 1+2, key S+H, expression input, and parameter locking. there may be some I missed. but it’s definitely not just ā€œassign any source to modulate any destination.ā€

I don’t believe it’s possible to directly modulate the filter with noise. you can modulate it with OSC 2, however. neither option is a ā€œstandardā€ in mono-synths. so it’s cool you can do one of them, if not both. also if you have an analog noise source to send to the expression input, you can route that to the filter. of course, this won’t fully save with your patches and you need to possess and set up the external noise source.

I don’t think you can use Noise to modulate the filter on Messenger. You can do it on the Subsequent 37, but it is actually a different noise source than the front panel noise source.

I use that synthesis approach a lot.

looks good for someone buying their first hardware synth. pretty sure that is their target market.

one thing – if this is supposed to replace the sub 25, i dislike how they took away the lovely amber lights that made the sub look like a control panel on a cozy, benevolent space ship.

it looks kinda flat and sterile and is missing that signature moog vibeyness. aesthetics are important to me for synths the same way they are for guitars.

this is not scratching that itch, unfortunately.

EOL’ing the Sub25 makes a lot of sense

It’s definitely more Nostromo than Starship Enterprise

The price in yen is surprisingly good compared to what we’ve been seeing the last few years. Maybe finally some relief.

This one is not really for me since I have a Grandmother and Take 5, but I can see how this could appeal to a lot of people, especially gigging musicians since it looks nicely portable.

Sound wise, it’s sounded a bit thin to me in a number of videos. As someone else also pointed out, this lacks the grit of the Grandmother mixer. That said, if I didn’t have a Grandmother and Take 5, I’d probably be really interested given the price.
