Thanks for confirming. Yes, it is disappointing as I was hoping to be able to drone a couple of oscillators while the remaining are tracked from the keyboard or sequencer.
Having fallen in love with the sound straight away but feeling like I couldnāt justify the cost, I recently got hit with Dark Edition FOMO and have been on the lookout for a used one at a good price. Finally ordered one this morning and feeling super hyped! I think thisāll make for an amazing combination with the Waldorf M.
I feel like I should get a few stackable cables or something, is there any reason not to just go for much cheaper headphone splitters here rather than the Tiptop ones?
I would hunt around for proper stackable cables.
I forgot where I got mine. Patchwerks or Sweetwater.
Itās good to eliminate clutter near the board, since real estate is so valuable with so many patch points.
Another great alternative is to get a multi splitter like a monkey fist or knuckle.
Hold on, let me find a link.
Found it.
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GMM105--hosa-gmm-105-knucklebones-1-to-5-signal-splitter
Itās a bit expensive.
But while searching around, I forgot there is Control Voltage as well that sells cables.
TBH, headphone splitters will definitely work, and itās really up to what you want to go with.
Come back and tells us what went with, and congrats on finally getting the Matriarch.
My experience was a journey of understanding. First I was blown away, but then I got frustrated with the limitations of the filter and lack of polyphony.
Then I picked up the Prophet 6, and it made the Matriarch shine Iād how itās specifically designed, and I realized how powerful paraphony can be, and that stereo delay was worth the money alone.
Keep exploring, and you will be rewarded.
Thanks for going to the effort there, much appreciated. Iāll check out the options.
Yeah, Iām a big fan of paraphony already (much more interesting than polyphony when well-implemented IMO) so combined with it being one of the few modern synths I instantly fell for the sound of it was inevitable Iād crumble at some point.
Itāll also pair very well with my Pro 2 for combination paraphonic oddness and CV between the two. Endless possibilities!
That was my exact rationale for all of it.
GMA for monophonic
Matriarch for paraphonic
Prophet for polyphonic.
To be clear it was a yo yo of appreciation.
The GMA is immediate so I thought it would be the same with the Matriarch. But I was let down the more I tried to use it. Then I got the prophet, which gave me the context to understand the Matriarch more.
So it was that I had to really learn nuance with the Matriarch. And to pay attention to how the syncing of the osc and the filters interacted with or without retriggering. and the paraphony.
There are times I still get frustrated but I have gotten some amazing sounds from her, so I know itās me not understanding, and not the Matriarch.
Some of the lingering issues and the lack of firmware updates were one concern I had over buying a Matriarch but once I saw someone on Gearspace had a beta update, that encouraged me to go for it.
Looks like I timed it quite well: Firmware 1.3.0
MIDI Velocity Curves: This feature allows the user to select a variety of keyboard velocity response curves. There are four options available: base, linear, stretched, and compressed. If you tend to play keys with a harder touch, try switching to linear or stretched to more easily produce softer velocity values. Alternatively, switching to compressed will make it so that higher velocity values are produced with less physical effort.
Pitch Wheel information added to the KB CV Out: The Pitch Wheel setting will now come out of the KB CV Out alongside the keyboard information. Try using the KB CV Out to modulate the stereo delay time 1 input to create longer delay times when you play higher notes on the keyboard. While holding a note, moving the Pitch Wheel will not only adjust the pitch, but it will now also modulate the delay time.
Response to the TIME 1 IN CV of the Stereo Delay is improved when synced.
KB GATE OUT will now follow MULTI TRIG selection.
KB VEL OUT (Keyboard Velocity CV Out), KB AT OUT (Keyboard Aftertouch CV Out), KB CV OUT (Keyboard CV Out), and KB GATE OUT (Keyboard Gate Out) correctly update when MIDI notes are played.
Global Setting 4.1: Delayed Keyboard Octave Shift has been improved and now also applies to the keyboard CV output.
Octave Transpose controls are now more responsive.
PPQN IN and OUT have been improved.
CC94 has been added to allow switching voice modes over MIDI.
Spurious MIDI messaging no longer occurs when HOLD function is engaged.
Am I reading that right that velocity etc. now get passed through/converted to the relevent CV when played via another MIDI controller?
Did this just drop?
From reading the notes you posted, I think by OUT, it is saying the cv coming from the Marriarch to another synth.
Iām trying to download the installer for mac but I just keep getting a 404 error - anybody else having this issue?
yep. having the same issue trying to download the windows version.
No problem here. I could download it on my iPhone.
Velocity curves are a really great addition. Looking forward to try them out. It only took 3 years to add them
Website still sketchy for me, but download worked from e-mail link
Ah the links worked from the email but not from the site. Sweet!
In case you need the link for osx: https://moogconnect.net/downloads/firmwareupdater/Moog_Firmware_Updater-1.1.0-macOS.zip
The CC94 update is odd to me. I did the instrument definition file for the Hapax and went to look at it to possibly update it but that value was already there.
Does anybody have a favourite getting started guide for the Matriarch? I think Iāve already myself a little thin researching many different resources and would like something I can follow along with.
I liked running through all the patches on Moogs website a couple time.
Plus, there is the Patch and Tweak book about the Moogs
So far Iāve been recreating patches from the manual and online PDFs which has been good. I think once I start sequencing them Iāll start to get a good grip on the semi modular side of things.
Thatās how I got started.
Taking the time to change settings in the patch and observe the effect on the sound has also been educational.
Later I watched this. I think I might have watched it before I got the Matriarch but I barely understood what they were talking about. After I patched up the patches from the official Moog patchbooks the video made more sense to me and I thus got a better learning experience from it, even though he messed up and left some patch points off camera.
