Moog Labyrinth

I made a mistake.

Call me a gobshite.

There was nothing to see, we have to be patient.

Mood Labrynths is going to be fun to add.

I just don’t know where it would go! I’ve got my Moog trio nicely and functionally boxed in.

Spectravox looks fun too, but I could wait for that one to pop up used. Labrynths, i might need to get new.

2 new Moog semi-mods look great (reminding me of the grandmother/dfam days) but when is Moog going to figure out a better design solution than those tiny knobs?? Also wondering if these ideas (ā€œwest coastā€) were not explored as much due to a previously staid attitude towards what Moog could be (although these must have been in development before the sale??). Or maybe they just finally have funds to finish and release them.

If they discontinue the Matriarch I wonder if we could see a standalone effects/processing type unit based on the mixer/filter/delay (and the gm reverb?) in a box like this (the Dubharmonicom). Or the moogerfooger phaser could be involved idk just dreaming a bit here…

the tiny knobs are not bad at all if you get the official moog knobs that go over them… its kind of annoying at this price they aren’t just preinstalling them on their newer devices though. Its like $35 or something for a set of little plastic knobs. It makes using the synths a lot better so its worth it in the end but it definitely feels like a small grift lol. Especially since you need two packs just to fully knob out a DFAM and Subharmonicon.

Interested in this.
Really digging the west coast vibe, and have been thinking of ways to extend the modulation capabilities of the sub+m32.
Not sure that I actually want (and have space for) a 3 tier rack though, it might become overwhelming. The 2 tier feels so compact and nice looking

Thanks, I know about the aftermarket knobs just think Moog should include them or something better than the current ones as standard

Agreed. I think it’s a shame they don’t just come pre-installed. They do make a difference.

For the price of the unit and the price of manufacturing those knobs, it seems it should be covered.

The only good thing (for me) is knowing I will have a use for the extra ones after buying 2 packs for DFAM.

Moog used to (maybe they have clones made these days, not sure) use Cosmo knobs. They are not cheap. I think when putting together these Euro format panels, they have space constraints, and price constraints they are trying to meet. It’s possible that the knobs would significantly impact that. Once again, if they make their own, have clones made, or just have a metric ton of stock, this wouldn’t be as big a deal. If they’re Cosmo, I think it would be significant. (I’m guessing the trim-style knobs are ok for most people, so maybe the trade-off isn’t worth it.)

I agree though, bigger knobs is usually better. That’s one thing that I refuse to spare expense for in my own building. Some of the knobs I use are over $6 each. I don’t try to meet a price or size point though. I just use what I like, and it ends up where it ends up.

Not that I don’t get your point… but Moog sells the knobs to go over the small ones on these semi-modulars. They don’t obscure anything, so it can’t be due to space constraints.

Granted. However, I don’t think that was their original intention. I think people asked for that, and they probably noticed a lot of people putting larger knobs on them themselves. They definitely started selling the knob packs after the DFAM came out.

Looking at the silk-screen placement over those trim-style ones, it’s a bit tighter than I (personally) would print the labels with larger knobs. I would re-space them to allow for the labels to be just a bit higher off the axis.

Just saying, I’m pretty sure it’s more of an afterthought fix brought on by requests than something they set out to do.

IMO, spending a bit more time to make it all fit with knobs would be worthwhile. However, at least in the case of the Labyrinth, it does seem pretty dense within some of the functional blocks. I’m actually not sure how (for example) the ones in the VCO section would look all populated with knobs. I think it would look a bit cluttered in that case.

I think the opposite is true on the DFAM in the sequencer section though. I think the knobs look good there.

This is why I generally stick to 4U and 5U formats though.

IMO the best layouts I’ve seen in Euro format were the huge Ken Macbeth oscillator and filter modules that took up around half an 84HP rack.

Any word when this is available?

They added a link to the product page in a comment on that video 14h ago, but it’s a 404. Smells imminent.

This is the coolest product they’ve made lately IMO!

I was dead set on getting one, but it’s so similar to some of the core modules that I make myself, that I figured I’d just build my own. I also sold my Grandmother (which this would have been an addition to), so I think 4U modular makes more sense again now for me.

Very cool panel though. I really think it will do wonders especially for people that use Moog a lot, and haven’t dabbled in ā€œWest Coastā€ synthesis much. I think it will open some doors.

They have made the video private I was looking forward to watching it

The video went mainly through the sequencer, randomization of note/rest and pitch. More videos later on other features. The two sequencers can either run separately or sequentially in order.

it sounded pretty awesome for just being a video for the sequencer too, definitely seems to have a unique voice. very excited to see how it will pair with the others in the 60hp collection….labyrinth+ dfam + mother/subharmonicon would be quite a fun power house trio to play and jam on
