Monomachine screen dims when changing patterns

I just purchased a monomachine and was trying to make sure everything worked before telling the seller it was good. In the afternoon of the second day I came back to it and found that it wouldn’t turn on. I panicked and rushed to another outlet to test it, nothing. Then I just flicked the power switch on and off a few times in the original outlet (I was baffled by this point) and it suddenly started again, but only sat at the splash screen.

Eventually it booted back up but then I started noticing that the screen would dim when I pressed the button (arp) to change the patterns. It would dim so much that I could hardly read the screen, like it’s not getting enough power to it or something. The reason must be related to the LEDs associated with the 16 notes. If I go into record mode and highlight each note, the screen gets dimmer. Is this normal? Is the power supply going bad? When I lift the power supply and lightly shake it, you can hear something rattling around.

Not sure if I should keep it, return it, or try to get a new power supply to fix the problem (if that is the problem). The current power supply is this:

Input: 120VAC/60Hz/167mA/20VA
Output:6VAC/2,8/16,6VA
Type: FW 6798/N

Thoughts? Sorry for the long rant. I saw a similar thread on e-u, and something kinda close, but not exact on this forum. Thanks for your help

Edit: sorry sorry, forgot to mention it’s a MK1. Also it’s ‘modded’ meaning that the screen is actually the inverse colors (dark blue background, light blue text)

Same problem here. Turned on last week and stuck on logo screen. Have tried all the resets, different sockets etc but no luck. Interested to know if you got this resolved…

I would test the power supply first to make sure it’s working correctly.

Yeah, I want to but the only way would be to order a new one. Don’t know any other mnm owners in Sussex so it could be an expensive guess. local music store only does them to order. Do you know if this has worked for anyone else?

You can use a multimeter to see if the correct voltage is being output. Perhaps someone you know has one? When problems arise I always check power first.

Thanks for the tip. My neighbor just checked it on his multimeter and the dc seems fine - just over 6 volts. Played around with the cable but it remained steady. At least now I know it’s not a power issue. The test page says all the hardware is ok which makes me think it could be a software bug. Problem started after trying to slave the mnm to renoise 3.0 on my laptop. Anyone else had similar problems?

Ok cool. Glad the PS is ok. Have you tried a software reset?

Tried the factory, empty, and soft resets. Also tried reloading the OS. Still freezes on the boot page each time. Lights flash on initially before going off and screen freezes on the elektron logo.
Have contacted elektron support but not heard back yet.

This exact same thing happened to a MonoMachine MKII that I bought a while back ago. Within the first year, this stuff started happening. I tried MANY things (as you did!) but absolutely nothing worked.

Needless to say, that MonoMachine has been in-and-out of America more times than I have. Took a while before I got it back, too.

…dang…

Does it work now? Be gutted if this is just the start of something. If you have any idea what the fault was with your machine would be useful to know in case it’s the same with mine.

Hey everyone, I’m sorry that I haven’t responded here!!! I didn’t get any emails telling me that people posted :frowning: Despite the fact that I’m ‘subscribed’.

I talk about how I get it to boot! Might work for you!!!
