Incredible! I’d never shell out the money for a used one or deal with their old OS, but will happily sample some sounds into TV!
Edit: After reading the article, that won’t happen. You basically need an MD or MM to use the plugin, I thought they were turned into free plugins because they’re legacy products that Elektron doesn’t sell anymore. Bummer.

I know this doesn’t include the ROM or whatever but something about posting a VST on Elektron’s own forum which only works if you own the hardware or - let’s be real, because this is what most people would do - illegally obtain the ROM, feels pretty weird.
At the very least the title should be changed to reflect that it’s 3rd party.

Also worth pointing out - this VST is vibe coded (or “sloptomized” per reddit posts by someone who claims to be affiliated with the project), for those who care about such things.

There’s no way that ROM could be uploaded somewhere on the internet, right? That would be really bad because you could access this VST for free if that was the case.

I have no idea. Tbh I don’t understand this whole idea at all. I thought that someone made fairly good enough VST’s on the MnM and MD, which would be awesome and make a lot of sense. But this, I’m totally clueless.

TUS emulated hardware have the same issue BTW. I see no one complaining about that, it doesn’t mean it cannot be discussed within the boundaries of acceptable.
All synths emulated by TUS are out of production and not officially sold anywhere. That’s why they waited before making the OSTirus public. They also reached out to the original copyright owners before making the VSTs public.
MD and MM are out of production and no longer sold since a long time, so this feels in the same ballpark though I’m not sure Elektron was reached out before this was made public. And probably that the original firmware is available on Elektron’s support page.

I agree it feels off to be enthusiastic about pirating Elektron’s IP on their own forum. Even though the MM and MD are no longer in production, maybe they are planning to license the code to Arturia for a plugin someday, or release it themselves?

this stuff gets tricky when they have a statement in the eula that says:
You may not and may not permit others to (i) disassemble, decompile or otherwise derive source code from the Software; (ii) reverse engineer or create derative works of the Software (iii) copy the Software; (iv) or use the Software in any manner that violates the terms of this Agreement or infringes Elektron’s intellectual property or other rights.
You may not distribute, rent, sublicense, lease or otherwise make the Software available, directly or indirectly, for use by any other person.

Also, intellectual property wasn’t invented so that someone could say, “We refuse to make X, and we will use the state to ensure you can’t either.”

yes, but those were done before the advent of llms. also, in this video (timestamped here), ess states that elektron was unsure how to “legally” support that project, but they were impressed.
to paraphrase, he said something along the lines of “the people at elektron were curious and impressed but unsure how to legally support the development of it. internally, it was like a lot of respect and admiration. everyone was really impressed and thought it was really cool that someone was breathing life and fixing things in the machinedrum.”
