Mono synth suggestion required

I need a synth to build an album around - think Surgeon and his synthi clone for his raw trax eps. So, I’m looking for a mono synth with the following features:

  • built in sequencer
  • knob per function
  • analogue or digital with analogue filter
  • Audio input desirable
  • 2 or more oscillators
  • ‘aggressive’ sound

Suggestions?

Norand Mono or Erica Synths DB-01
Not sure if DB-01 has two oscillators though

Moog Matriarch

A pro3? That can get really aggressive.

Minifreak?

Korg Monologue. I bought it recently and it’s great, I especially love the sequencer, very performance oriented and the sound has quite a distinct and aggressive character.

ASM Hydrasynth Explorer. It’s got a step sequencing LFO. Audio input only on the Desktop or more expensive models though.

That description makes me picture a Sub37.

Technically, the BS2 would fit, though I’m not a fan.

There is also BFG9000

I would go Pro 3 (and did!) if its a mono (paraphonic) you are after…

  • 2 great analogue osc + WT top give you a bit more movement.
  • Lots of analogue filter options
  • Analog distortion and ‘feedback’ can make it really aggressive.
  • Probably the best sequencer of any mono synth
  • Good fx, good connectivity (midi, CV and USB VST editors available)

What about a budget?

Novation monostation?

I think you’re describing the Minibrute 2s. I happen to have one slaps brute for sale right here.

Second that the Minibrute 2S fits the description. Great sequencer, aggressive sound (wavefolding capabilities), knob per function, two VCO:s, analog filter. And the patchbay makes it a great synth to base an album around, since it can be made to sound in many different ways.

+1 for the MB2S. BassStation 2 is another good shout but the 2S has prob got a different dimension. The keyboard version is worth a look too albeit with a more simplified sequencer section

If funds allow the Pro 3 is a real powerhouse but we’re prob talking 3x the price of the other two. A budget would be helpful to narrow things down

Prophet rev2 (with layer A in unison mode)? Ticks these boxes… Almost.

So whilst you don’t get the * Audio input* part, you do get a 4 (or 8) voice poly on Layer B, just in case.

I’m about to sell my Pro 3, I could do with muting this thread…

Thanks all. Going to have a look at the minibrute 2s. I plan on pairing it with my Perkons for lots of raw analogue techno.
