For those who haven’t heard yet, Modstep finally got released today for iPad. Very reminiscent of Ableton Live/Push, it’s primarily a midi sequencer, although it does have a sampler and synth built in. Gotta say that I’m pretty impressed, and it seems like it could be the answer for a midi sequencer for those using the Analog line from Elektron. Only messed with it a bit tonight, and while it could use a manual/tutorials, it was pretty easy to figure out and has a lot of potential. Anyone else give this a spin yet?
This looks next level… Going to pick it up asap.
Awesome.
I have been in search for the ultimate iPad sequencer forever. Every single one of them have at least one shortcoming for me.
Since I need it almost exclusively for programming external synths I hope you are kind enough to answer my two questions:
- can you send program changes to it? ex.: I have a dummy clip in Ableton arrange view and want to trigger a certain clip inside Mod Step
- how many ext. hardware MIDI CCs can you program inside Mod Step?
Please let it be the one
Confusing name, seeing as there’s already a ModSeq in the Eurorack world.
Unfortunately, my computer is out for repair until probably the beginning of the year and I can’t test it with Live, but I can try sending it PC from the OT or Mono to see what happens.
It doesn’t appear to have any limit on the number of CCs from what I can tell, which is wicked as it is so easy to write in automation on this app. If they ever add sysex control, this might be the best sequencer in a long, long time.
wow. This means a new era for USB MIDI compatible hardware synths…I mean wohhaa imagine the crazy modulations!!
Totally busy with Rytm for now but if I won’t be able to resist until you get your computer back I will shoot them an email regarding program changes. As for MIDI CC I read somewhere that the limit should be 128 different CCs per track! If this is meant also for hardware…then I am spechless.
Will reply here if I find something new…
I’m interested, but there’s reports of major bugs on the AppStore. Anyone else having problems with it?
FINALLY.
Eager to put my iConnectMidi2+ and iPad Air to use sending CC# LFOs into A4 and Rytm.

I’ve not taken the dive yet, but this is from half an hour ago on Modstep’s FB page:
“Dear betatesters and users! We wish you happy holidays! The first update is already uploaded and will fix bugs and introduce Ableton Link integration”
Ipad Air 2 here: For starters, I had no sound output from internal samples in demo songs. Now I deleted the internal tracks and it keeps crashing every time I open it, which renders it unusable.
I noticed that it had Studiomux selected as default audio output when I first opened it - perhaps the reason why no sound?
It looks like this was a Christmas release that was a little too hasty.
This promises to be a super-app. Keep chipping, devs. In the mean time I suggest people approach with caution until fixed.
I’ll repost my comment from the Audiobus forum:
“Crash city over here on my iPad 4, iOS 8.4. Used it for about 2 hours last night sequencing some hardware, maybe one or two crashes. Tonight I tried loading up just Animoog in Modstep and managed to sequence a bar a few times, but it started crashing, first losing connection with Animoog, then telling me “too many instances” despite being the only ones open. Tried deleting Animoog from the session, but it crashed every time and automatically reopened Animoog every time I tried starting Modstep again. Closed everything on my device and only opened Modstep…same thing. Power cycled, then only opened Modstep. Same thing. Now, I can’t even get past the loading screen and the app is totally useless.
Not a good look. Hopefully this is addressed soon.”
Any infos on how solid the clocking is? Especially if you use let’s say the internal sampler for drum hits plus external sequenced hardware. Is there any noticeable lag between the two?
Just a follow up: deleting the app and reinstalling it appears to have fixed the problems I had after trying to use Animoog with Modstep, but I won’t be trying that combo again (and may not bother using it with anything but hardware midi sequencing) until an update or two comes. Still lots of potential in this app, so I hope they iron the bugs out.
As an aside, it would be wicked if they added an assignable midi LFO option, a la LFO Tool or the M4L equivalent.
Can a midi keyboard be used with this app? It would be nice to have control over velocity note input.
Yes it has Studiomux built in so if you connect your ipad to your computer and any midi device connected to your computer can send midi to your ipad. Or camera connect kit can be used if you don’t want to connect to computer. It does have issues but a new version has been submitted. So you may want to wait unless you want to beta test.
I personally have had success with sequencing ios apps Boom 808, Animoog, Addictive , Cassini and Magellan, with Turnado in the effect slot.
Have not tried any hardware yet.

Kool thanks!! I’m strictly interested in sequencing external gear. I’ll keep an eye on this app!!
