I would always get the Xone96 over the Model1

X96 is a tried and tested classic, made better with every iteration, but the m1 is unmatched in sound quality
There quite a few in here, you should give a look but nothing that’s a huge no go
I know the 96 is a classic but I don’t know, the philosophy behind the M1 catches my attention. The fact I could get the M1 for 2.300€ is also very tempting !
I have a 1.4
I thought of buying x96
Why I am happy with my choice:
the eq is very nice. Not only it’s sound, also it doesn’t take much processor memory of my brain. Fantastic HpFilter on every track makes me cut the sound very right. If needed I up or down some freq. all super intuitive, works better than 4 band eq for me
the size is really nice
no x faders saves me from a lot of unpleasant accidents.
really like the saturation knob on every channel.
So for me it brings a log of power (like x96), but more efficient for my brain
Thanks for the feedback. This is what I have in mind ! I don’t need the integrated soundcard, the number of channels of the M1 is enough. I’m bit more concerned by the issues I’ve read in here but I guess I will have to give a try and see how it goes
Don’t really understand the speedy j argument.
Its everywhere in the Stoor Studio, he uses it for liveset and performances as it is a quite flexible mixer
Probably the Model 1 sounds better but the xone has more options in terms of connections and it is a tested environment
Better sound than xone 96…. Perfect is already perfect. Might be a little better, but it doesn’t add any value to me, since x96 sounds so good.
If you want a very big and ‘normal’ mixer, then x96 is really good. Nothing against x96. Especially for dj ing….
If you like the connectivity with digital gear (computer), x96 might be a better idea, m1 is expensive.
But artists using gear should never be the argument to have an opinion, I think.
I 100% agree, my argument was more towards the point that is a tested environment for livesets and performances.
The fact that Ritchie Hawtin uses and promote the Model 1 is good enough reason for me to not invest in it
I’ll probably kick myself for doing it, but I’ll bite…please explain.
To offer something constructive, my Model 1 didn’t have any of the issues reported here. Maybe some noise out cue B but only through the headphone jack, not the DB25 outputs. DB25 was the reason I chose the M1 over the X96. And I like the eq setup better. I love the high and low pass filters on each channel. And the drive on each channel. OK now I’m rambling.
I know all the fuzz around him about his pricey stuff and I fully agree tho
Why
I don’t listen to hawtin although I used to love plastikman music. Also saw him playing timewarp and had a (sober) amazing time from 5am-2pm
But come one, gear is not about the marketing communication. I don’t choose gear because of that.
And I think it makes no sense to focus on hawtin or speedy. Focus on your own needs!
In few words: “marketing gimmick”
And built in Scotland instead of China… (not sure whether that is relevant with respect to quality, but it certainly has an impact on the price point)
Yep. I have the latest orion 32+ gen 3.
Hey all,
Hope everyone is doing great.
I have a question for the actual Model 1(.4) users that dwell around here
How are your units holding up?
I’m considering a 1.4 to replace my current mixers I use for music production atm. Namely an E&S DJR 400 rotary mixer and a Radial Key Largo. I’m positive sound quality will be on par with what I’m using at the moment and options for sound manipulation would reach much further with the gear I’m using now.
It’s just the quality control issues I’m picking up here and there. Faders and knobs going bad after a short time of usage, white paint rubbing off the faceplate. Are we talking teething problems here?
Looking forward to your experiences!
Best,
Mark
I recently got Model 1. As much as I wanted to love this mixer for all the additional features that we don’t have in any typical DJ mixers, somehow my guts told me to return it!
1- M1 gets really hot and that it smells like soldering and it’s not going away entire room smells very metal burning.
2- channel faders get really loud around 90-100 top section. There’s not enough room to fade out. I know that you can use the filters and blah blah to fade out of the mix but I don’t wanna have this feeling that I’m walking on a robe.
3- master filter is also weird. you have to prep yourself before your session. Lol and gets also really loud if you bring the resonance up around 12 o’clock.
4- I had a feeling that this mixer will fail today or tomorrow somewhere somehow
Note: I have the Urei 1620 for the last 30 years and it feels like butter every mix!
If you’re coming from rotary mixer world, you will hate this mixer but if your purpose is production, if you can pass by the issues that I’m having than it maybe a nice one.
Long time elektronaut chiming in.
My 1.4 has been in the studio since October '21. Everything runs through it. I use the RCA ins, FX sends/returns and balanced DB25 ins. Prior to the Model 1.4 I was running an SSL Six (I’m not a singer/songwriter). All techno/electro - synths, drum machines, modular and turntables.
I heard about paint issues, fader curves, leds not all being the same brightness, etc… It’s not a scratch mixer - I haven’t worn a label that I can see. I don’t care about the leds or really notice them while performing.
It’s got it’s quirks. Run it high gain and it gets very creamy. You might want to attenuate before your mains.
All this talk makes me want to play…
Differently
I have bought my Model 1 used from a rental company, and I presume it was gigged regularly for a couple of years. I have the cosmetic issues that are mentioned elsewhere (fragile printing, leds with a slightly different hue), and I had to replace one DSub card, but otherwise everything is fine - I do not find the heat excessive and do not have any problem with the fader curves, filter, etc. But much of the latter comes down to expectations and previous experiences, I guess.
Edit: the biggest negative point for synth use in my view is that you cannot send it a mono signal without using a signal splitter.
