So I can hit the ground running I have a couple of questions for you existing MNM experts:
I’m going to be running it with my OT and MD mk1. At the moment I use OT as master, then sync the MD via midi. Can I use the thru of the OT to send clock to the MNM or will I have to use the MD’s thru?
Following on from 1, is there any noticeable lag chaining the boxes in this fashion? I have a midi patchbay but would prefer not to have to take it to gigs.
I’ve seen the ‘turn off key-tracking’ advice on here already, looks like a useful tip. Are there any essential tips you wish you had known at the start of your MNM journey?
I use Arranger mode in the OT a lot to sequence the muting and unmuting of md channels, external midi etc and to prepare evolving patterns. Are the MNM parts easily mutable via midi, and more importantly does the mute also immediately cut off any delays or reverb trails (like on the OT).
Following on from 4, is it staightforward to, for example; run the first 3 monomachine channels (machines? synths?) directly from the MNM sequencer, and then trigger the other 3 from the OT midi channels to make use of microtiming? As you can PLock the midi trigs I’m assuming you can Plock MNM parameters from the OT and get pretty close to how it would sound if you programmed the same pattern into the MNM.
There’s no midi sync from the OT via the Thru port, you will have to chain them. I haven’t tried it myself so can’t answer your specific questions but there should be no noticeable lag. I use a midi splitter to send the OT out to various things. But for your set up this seems unnecessary.
I would assume that the MIDI Thru of the MD is implemented according to the specification, which means that the latency is about a microsecond or so. No worries
I posted these links in another thread, they’re pretty much best of collections of tips and tricks put together by users from the other/ old elektron users forum.
You should have no issue sending messages to the MNM for mutes and such and the delay and release from the MNM’s track will continue after you mute them.
I would say yes to everything from number 5. The OT’s midi tracks really add a lot to the MNM. You can split up the sequencing any way you like and plock any on the MNM’s CCs, including the joy stick.
Holy shit P-locking the joystick! Now that is a gooood tip, cheers
I’ve had the MNM for 6 hours now and have already had so much fun with it, such an awesome bit of kit and lovely to use with an MD and OT.
