I’m sure I’ve seen it asked in the past but I can’t find it at the moment. I’m curious as to what mixers y’all are using with your gear. More specifically those of you who are able to route channel signals to aux sends with aux returns rather than having to route the external fx to a channel. Example would be to send some or all of different channels to the aux in and have it send back on a aux out. Onboard fx aren’t necessary as I’ve never needed them in the past but it would be nice to have enough channels to grow with more than one aux. just trying to get an idea on opinions of quality and personal experiences with different brands. Being that we love our music to sound as great as it can and the price we pay for these machines I’m not expecting many budget minded mixers. But let’s see what y’all use.
Really interested in seeing where this goes too. I’ve been eyeing off an XR18, but is seems much more orientated to stage than studio.
Thanks for clearing up the search for the term “mixer” as I saw many topics posted. I had specifics to which I asked such as your opinions. Get some sleep and readdress this when your sarcastic responses to an honest curiosity are less likely to be the knee jerk answer.
To the rest of the world. Is anyone out there who can add to my questions and their opinions on why they are after certain Specs in a mixer such as analog or digital mixer and routing schemes constructively please do.
I would also like to add that my interest in the mixer opinions is also with the release of A4 mk2 having independent outs per channrel, digitakt and or either of the octatracks as well as theAR mk2 ability to sample incoming audio what would be the best mixers in your opinions for controlling what gets routed to the inputs of the sampler based boxes and routing control from A4 and other synths to these or to the Heat and other effects boxes.
Not cheap, but if pre and post auxes are what you’re after the Allen & Mixwizard WZ4 14:4:2 has 6 auxes.
Whoa. Where are the aux sends routed to? To the inserts for each channel? You are right, pretty pricey. But I think this one will cook and take out the trash! Do you posses this one?
That Mackie mixer looks pretty legit.
Presonus Studiolive 24.4.2 AI - because auf its firewire interface which allows bidirectional routing between DAW and/or Mixer. I have seen them second hand for 1.000€.
Damn! Besides being pretty much futureproof that’s probably all anyone would ever need plus miles to grow on. So does the parametric eq mean that the eq settings are shared across several channels then can be set one way for A and a different way for B? I like this mixer but realistically I think the Makie is more practical. But for endless routing what could be better? $1600 new isn’t bad for what you are getting. I’ve never been crazy about mixer effects but the compressor, gate, and limiter on here is something to look at.
Six sends and two pairs of stereo returns? I do like Allen and Heath though. I’ve had some of their Dj Mixers in the past. All in all, I’m just curious what everybody uses and what they wish for and why. I’ve never paid enough attention to the mixer arena much in the past. I just sold my Soundcraft Signature 22MTK today. It had great sound but limited routing options for what I paid for it compared to some of the mixers y’all have listed so far. It had two fx units but like I’ve said before, I’m not concerned about the on board fx so much as the eq’ing. Should I be?
I use the Allen and Heath Zed R16. It has awesome EQ, inserts and 4 aux sends on 16 channels.
Can also be used as a 16 channel sound interface and midi controller. I’ve has it for about 7 years.
Other gear comes and goes but this thing earned its place at the center and stays put.
I never even thought to use a mixer as a midi controller. I just looked it up. Transport control, 12 roarty knobs, and is that for 8 pages? I’ve been considering a novation launchpad xl to expand the controls of my pulse 2. This has it built in. That’s pretty cool. Do other mixers open up the main mix board to allow midi control?
Rule No 1: Take as much power (interface, mixer, CPU) as you can.
A digital mixer offers some advantages like storing scens and settings and a high flexible routing. The settings on a Presonus were stored in a so called ‘fat channel’ (gate, compressor, eq) it’s nothing more than one panel for all channels. You can store as much presets as you like (RAM limited).
Midi control via mixer? AFAIK not for these studio types. You find it on those tiny dj-mixers. The launchpad works fine!

I’m using an A&H 14:4:2 and have been trying a looper pedal.
The pedal is on an insert to a synth channel, connected via a y-cable.
I can’t see to send that channel’s return signal via aux send effects. Is that normal behaviour?
I’ve only limited use of insert effects in the past (on other mixers) but never noticed this before.
