Hello all
I am new to the process and pretty happy with the current setup but have begun thinking to switch interface to a mixer/interface for a live performance feel.
Currently running
Digitakt and Drumbrute for percussion DT sending midi to
Hydrasyth and minitaur
Drumbrute sending clock to DFAM
And Analog Four is the latest addition
Current interface is arturia audio fuse studio does nice but lots of issue getting clock and settings dialed with everything when it and Ableton where in the middle. So (for now am going DAWless) everything connected via midi din. Clock sync is way better.
Now Im considering getting an interface that can act as mixer for playing live. It would be great if I can connect to daw for recording at some point or if I wanted to maybe go hybrid and integrate some soft synths. (But that’s down the line) I’d like the option though.
I’m looking at tascom model 12 but can’t help but feel it’s overkill. I’m open to recommendations and if it’s worth it i will splurge just wanted seee if there’s some more recommendations are out there.
I’m thinking also what if I use a4 inputs and maybe configure cc from my novation launch control to a4 and then I won’t need a mixer at all.
But I do like the idea of tascom, for it’s extra IO, sends returns, audio outputs to sub etc. many pros to it I know. Plus expandability layer
Genuine question: if the Tascam feels overkill, what are you hoping to achieve with a mixer? The Tascam is pretty average for mixing duties, with the added feature of being an interface.
Are you looking to multitrack into a daw or just record the main mix? If multitrack, then yeah, some kind of mixer-interface or interface with a lot of inputs is the way to go. Mackie, Presonus, and Zoom also have these kinds of mixers.
Otherwise, you could use a regular mixer and route the various outputs to your interface. For example, I have my mixer sends and main mix going to an interface. I can’t multitrack, but it allows me to apply effects via the sends, which then get blended with the main mix coming in.
The benefit here is that it’s a lot cheaper to pick up a used 8 or 16 channel mixer to combine with a 4 or 8 channel interface.
Just an aside/nit-pick, the Tascam does not have returns. You have to use the mixer channels for returns. This might be acceptable for you, something I often do, but wanted to point it out.
I wouldn’t mess with the daw and outboard gear during a live performance: the balance is unstable and you could risk embarrassing moments. Better to choose a 100% analog setup connected to a real mixer and no computer. I’m using a Mackie 22profx now: it’s versatile and gets the job done, ok it doesn’t have a great sound but for live it’s fine.
Aside from stability, the show benefits when there are no computer screens on stage, there’s more rock’n’roll vibe: who wants to attend a performance where the musician seems to be checking his email?
I love my Model 12 but I think might be too big and heavy to carry around to live performances. Better suited as home studio gear or as a mini FOH-type mixer at a venue. Also it has a well-known power switch issue, which would make it less reliable than I’d recommend for gigging.
For what it’s worth, I haven’t had any issues since I replaced that power switch. I think it’s an isolated case of a bad part, super annoying to deal with but fortunately not representative of the overall quality.
thanks you guys this is helpful yeah the size was the only thing really making me feel like its a bit overkill but im not seeing too many other option in the smaller size was considering the zoom L6 i love its super mobile friendly but the tasom just has more so its a hard trade off leaning towards tascom will be at home studio most of the time for now. i guess there is room to grow…
thanks for this… reinforced my feeling. at first i had everything sync via ableton and it was rough getting this going, one day a light bulb went off, connect everything via midi dins dont turn on the computer and it was so much smoother. i think this its the direction for me
Everybody knows that Nigeria has been a republic since 1963. Before that, the african country was in the Commonwealth: this means that the last monarch was Queen Elizabeth II.
I thought about it: in my opinion the one sending all those scam emails could be Prince William
