Missing Keyboard Step Input & Auto-Advance in Octatrack MIDI Sequencer

Hello,

I’m looking for a way to use the Octatrack MIDI sequencer together with an external keyboard, with the following workflow:

  1. Step input with auto-advance:
When the sequencer is not running, I want to enter one note at a time from the keyboard, with the step automatically advancing to the next step and waiting for the next input.
  2. Per-step note assignment:
I’d like to be able to edit an individual step by holding that step and then pressing a key on the keyboard to assign the desired note to that step.

So far, it seems that the Octatrack does not support these behaviors. This surprises me a bit, given that it’s often regarded as one of the best hardware sequencers.

For comparison, my Korg Minilogue XD supports both of these step-input modes, in addition to live recording (which the Octatrack of course also has).

Am I missing something in the Octatrack workflow, or is this simply not possible?

If it’s not supported, can you recommend other hardware sequencers that do offer this kind of functionality?

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

The Octatrack was released in and has remained mostly unchanged since 2010, so I guess set your expectations accordingly.

The one thing that I would say is the common factor between people who are surprised when a piece of gear doesn’t do what they want it to, is that it is always the one obscure feature they’d like it to have that it doesn’t while ignoring all of the things that it does do.

At any rate, can’t help you here because I don’t believe that the OT can do what you want it to but welcome to the forum and best luck with achieving your desired workflow.

OT doesnt do this.

OT does do this. I use arturia keystep. Works perfectly.

Yeah No.2 definitely works. If it’s not currently working for you you’ll probably want to look into the MIDI setup and MIDI trig mode.
