MIDI routing question

Hey guys. I’ve been trying to get this specific setup to work and I can’t seem to wrap my head around it.

My setup:
Digitakt, korg minilogue xd, model:cycles and a launchpad pro.

My goal:
I’m trying to keep the digitakt as the main clock but use the launchpad’s note mode on all of my machines to both play and record into the digitakt.

My issue:
I can’t seem to get it to record notes into the digitakt and also send transport messages from the digitakt to the cycles at the same time. It seems to be one of the other. I’ve tried multiple arrangements.

Is there just something I’m not seeing?

Hi! I had a very similar setup question for the exact same set of hardware, except with a DAW as the main clock and replacing the Launchpad. From what I know about the Launchpad, what about the following MIDI flow?

Launchpad OUT > DT IN
DT OUT > M:C IN
M:C THRU > MXD IN

and then, in DT’s settings, set it to receive & send transport with M:C set to receive & not send?

You may end up running into the same issue that I’ve been having getting channel data to pass through to the MXD; that said, transport has been working like a charm for me. Give that a shot?

I will give it a shot right now. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll let you know how it went!

It’s as if i can only send note values to my machines with the launchpad if i go into the M:C midi IN from the THRU port on my DT. But that means i can’t send transport messages. It’s as if transport messages are only sent on MIDI OUT port while the note values are sent on the midi thru? I’m brand new to all of this so sorry if this is hard to follow.

You’re good - I’m relatively new as well.

Hmm. On the launchpad, is there a setting to ensure that you’re sending transport? It also just occurred to me - are you planning to use the DT as the place where you record and playback?

As far as i know, i don’t even see any transport options on the LPP when you’re not controlling a DAW with it. So yes, i’m trying to keep the DT as the main clock and what i use to record into and just use the LPP as a keyboard to input notes. Is this even possible without having the LPP as the main clock source?

I’m far too dense to figure this out. i just wanna go bink bink boop on the LPP and make stupid songs.

Ah - this might help!

Launchpad Pro Programmer’s Reference Guide

Check out page 4 - apparently you have to be in a separate mode to access the MIDI standalone outputs.

This is prob the edge of my ability to help due to my never having touched one of these things in my life, lol. But it definitely should be possible to do what you’re describing! If that’s not the answer, I’m sure someone else more experienced on this forum can help.

Best of luck!

Welcome to the forum!

Yes. Connect the gear as in @AphexEscher4422’s first post and then use the Auto Channel facility on the DT:

  • set the LPP to transmit MIDI notes on the DT’s Auto Channel,
  • set the MIDI tracks of the DT to transmit on the MIDI channel numbers that you have set on the M:C.

Now when you select a track on the DT, the notes from the LPP will play the DT’s audio track or the M:C’s tracks as applicable.

Some further settings may be required, so try it out and report back if there’s still a problem.

I could kiss you right now @PeterHanes. I had everything you suggested taken care of i just forgot to set the midi channels on the digitakt! thank you so much!

My only problem with setting it up like that is the DT doesn’t support retrig for midi tracks so i can’t really get a ton out of the M:C as is.

Thanks, but that’s not why I’m here. I would rather that you “pay it forward” by helping someone else on the forum when you are able or just by posting your music when you’re ready to share.

That’s fair lol @PeterHanes. I also meant to thank @AphexEscher4422 in that last message too but I was overly excited. So thank you.

Here’s a YouTube Playlist of live jams with my digitakt as the heart of my rig.
