Midi interface to use OT sequencer with Ipad Air

Hi,

I’m looking for a Midi Interface to connect my IPad Air to the Octatrack, I don’t want to use a Laptop in the process. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks
Hans

iconnectMidi 4+

Can say nothing like getting an Octatrack to work with Animoog! Had to fist punch the air about 5 times in a fit of joy. :imp:

If you’re going to get an iConnectivity product, I’d hold out for the Audio4+ that is due out soon. Seems like Audiomux and Midimux cover most of the same territory as the Midi units, but if you’re working entirely OTB having standalone audio AND midi seems crucial.

That said, there are lots of options if you’re a bit creative and realize that just about anything will work as long as it is class compliant and doesn’t draw too much power. I’ve hacked together iOS midi connections using a CCK, powered USB hub, and a cheap generic USB/midi cable before with no issues, and even there you could skip the hub if you wanted to.

Currently using Roland Duo Capture EX as my iPad’s MIDI interface and audio interface at the same time.

Thought about getting an iConnectMIDI4+ but apparently it will stop you from running external audio into your iPad for FX processing - which for me is a dealbreaker.

You happy with that? Someone (won’t mention any names) recommended that unit to me to check out as a good option.

I’ve got a coule of MotU Ultralites (mk1) lying around, that I think might be suitable to use, but haven’t tried yet, and then they are 8/8 cards as well, which seems a bit of a waste?

Yup, pretty happy. I’ve used it the following ways:

  1. iPad MIDI sequencer triggering Microbrute - more of a test than anything as Microbrute’s own sequencer is easy to use and it can’t handle MIDI CC anyway.
  2. Microbrute as MIDI controller for iPad synth (Z3TA)
  3. #1 above combined with recording Microbrute audio into iPad

If I ever need more MIDI ports, I’ll just get a MIDI solutions box (eg Quadra Thru).

Roland Duo Capture Ex user here too though over the past few months I’ve used my iPad less and less and barely touch it for music now. Swings and roundabouts - I’m sure I’ll be back to jamming with it via the OT soon enough.

Ended up getting a cheapo USB-Midi cable. It seems to work reasonably well for sequencing duties and if not I can still just sample some stuff off the Ipad. IConnectivity 2 wasn’t available locally and I didn’t want to spend >€200 on the IC4+. Should still be fine for some fun.

Best,
Hans
