Midi help

Hi,

Loving the Model:Cycles so far, but I’m having trouble getting it to send midi notes. Probably some setting I’ve misunderstood but if anyone can shed any light, it would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve got the M:C connected to an Akai MPC One via USB.

Settings on the MC are:

Midi Sync:
Click In: On
Click Out: Off
PCH In: Off
PCH Out: Off

Midi In Chan:
T1 In: 11
T2 In: 12
T3-T6 Out: 13 - 16
FX In: Off
Auto In: 10
PCH In: Auto

Midi Out Chan:
T1 Out: 11
T2 Out: 12
T3-T6 Out: 13-16
FX Out: Off
PCH Out: 1

Midi Ports:
Inp from: USB
Out to: USB
Out Pol: STD
Out/Thru: Out

Midi Filter:
Rcv Note: On
Rcv CC: On
Encs: I+E

On the MPC, I’ve got seven midi tracks, set to the M:C device on channels 10-16. When I hit a pad on the MPC, it plays the M:C, but when I hit a pad on the M:C, the MPC does not receive any midi data.

Any ideas?

I believe the MIDI out only plays the internal notes of the sequencer.

Unless you change the mode to THRU (Settings / MIDI / Ports / OUT). Then it will forward the incoming MIDI, but ignore the internal tracks. (Edit: I wish this could be changed in a firmware update…)

You could use the Auto Channel, although only for one track at a time…

Thanks.

I tried adding some notes to the M:C sequencer, but they aren’t sent over either.

I’ve a feeling I’m missing something silly but I’ve been through every setting a hundred times by now, not sure what else to try

TBH, I’m planning on sequencing with the MPC, so can get away without having notes come across, but would like to capture twiddles on the shape, color, etc, knobs.

TBH, I haven’t tried USB-MIDI at all, only the TRS ports…
No experience with newer MPCs, either.
But I would expect it to behave the same way over USB.

Edit: just realized I had slightly misread your question. :frowning:

When you hit the MPC on channel 10 the M:C plays, correct?
The other channels I wouldn’t expect to work…

MISINFORMATION. Sorry mate, I was wrong.
It does play on the respective IN channels, too.

Did you activate ‘Mout’ in the Track Setup (FUNC+TRACK) for these?

There are quite a few settings that need to be right to get midi notes going to an external synth. This appears to be a comprehensive checklist:

It works, thanks so much guys!

I think the individual tracks’ MOut setting was the main thing missing.

In case anyone else comes across this thread with a similar issue, here’s a dump of the settings that work for me. Anything not listed hasn’t been changed from factory default.

Midi Sync:
Click In: On
Click Out: Off
PCH In: Off
PCH Out: Off

Midi In Chan:
T1 In: 11
T2 In: 12
T3-T6 Out: 13 - 16
FX In: Off
Auto In: 10
PCH In: Auto

Midi Out Chan:
T1 Out: 11
T2 Out: 12
T3-T6 Out: 13-16
FX Out: Off
PCH Out: 1

Midi Ports:
Inp from: USB
Out to: USB
Out Pol: STD
Out/Thru: Out

Midi Filter:
Rcv Note: On
Rcv CC: On
Encs: I+E

Tack setup (FUNC + TRACK buttons):
Mout: :heavy_check_mark: (do this for each of the six tracks)
