Pretty sure the letter 'C’s been around since at least the 40’s or 50’s
Well done everyone for pushing us past 100!
We’ve changed the future now for sure.
Now, Terminators will wipe us out whilst we’re all distracted by MIDI 10.0!
Yeah, nice one people, great job! Way to end the human race!
I think I hate MCU and HUI more than midi. That those protocols are still the standard is unbelievable.
And that’s a good thing. A tech which has been explored as much can be relied upon.
The only regretful decision in electronic instruments was the adoption of USB for MIDI. Such a mess of a “standard” and more particularly often the source of noise and other issues.
This is a good point, we are actually lucky to have a durable, decent sized, optically isolated cable for music gear today and not just usb everything. Which is why I hate trs midi since it negates all of the benefits and additionally adds confusion (type A and type B).
Progress
Korg is about to release a MIDI 2.0 controller keyboard with a poly-aftertouch keyboard. ( The keybed is from the keybed, and much else manufacturer Medeli. )
More info in this thread.
I expect more details to be coming along for how this works specifically and about integration with other hardware and software devices.
Thinking that they may add MIDI 2.0 support with their Wavestate Native software, as they are including the L.E. version of it with the controller. Just a hunch on that though. This certainly gives Korg an opportunity to put this sort of thing in their other software and hardware.
Woodsman has WoodSynth and WoodTroller for macOS. ( Synthtopia )
As far as DAWs – i think it is :
- Logic Pro X for Apple
- Multitrack Studio 10 for Windows and Apple
I’d expect more pretty soon.
Steinberg dioes have a VST SDK 3.7 which supports MIDI 2.0.
Is there anything preventing a kind of Midi 2.0 wrapper for existing controllers? For example, if I’m using an MPK Mini, the software could map the pads/knobs the classic way, and then advertise them to Midi 2.0 aware plugins/hardware for auto-mapping.
Nope. Should be reasonable either to do in software, or with a hardware box that sits in front of the controller — an updated Blokas MidiHub or a new Midigal etc.
during the announcement of midi 2.0 (years ago) , Bome Box said something about providing a MIDI-CI translation box. I suspect we will see a few implementations once CI becomes more widespread.
(of course this wont give you higher res midi, you are limited by your controller output)
I assume this means that at least Korg plug ins will be Midi 2 for 2 way communication! Juts need all the big developers top get on board, it’s a bit chicken and egg at the moment!
So i got this right.
Nice how KORG is filling the void with MIDI 2.0 soft synths. WaveState and Gadget now both support MIDI 2.0. And as Loopop says in his Keystage review video, there are these two, “with promises of more to come”. ( Modwave and OPSIX perhaps? ) This really benefits other MIDI 2.0 controller makers as well. I’ve got to hand it to KORG for stepping up and breaking the log jam.
I will be interested to see someone trying these soft synths with the other MIDI 2.0 controller ( so far ) the Native Instruments Series S Mk3.
What next ? Which soft synths would you like to see with MIDI 2.0 ?
I’m extremely excited for the possibility of bidirectional control between Op6/ modwave/ wavestate and their respective VSTs. Is it possible that midi 2.0 could be added to those or other hardware devices via firmware update, or does it require hardware revisions?
As far as controllers, I suppose it could be very cool for something like a midi fighter twister - I think any controller that displays the state of the controls in some way would benefit.
I thought that the only real hardware prereq was USB MIDI.
Yes potentially. I think there would be some raw processing speed needed and the USB may need to be at a certain level, but this could potentially be added to others existing controllers. It may be a high bar though.
I noticed that for instance Native Instruments bumped up the processor in the Mk3 controller, no doubt in part due to these needs.
I am hopeful for the synth / controller combinations like the Hydrasynths and the Osmose. I’d like to see the implementation on both sides. Glen has mentioned the issues implementing MIDI 2.0 so they’ve at least looked at it. Remember too that they added MPE after in a firmware upgrade, though they may be running out of room for too much more in firmware.
@Jukka thank you always for your thoughts and insights! Question:
Who is Glen?
Oh sorry.
This is a very very small part of the things new in the latest Cubase 13 release, but it matters :
The way they say “Ready for MIDI 2.0” strikes me as funny. Why not saying something more active and definite like “Support for MIDI 2.0”.
MIDI 2.0 support is something you’d have to expect from Yamaha Steinberg.
This is one more piece, the DAWs are ready, and there are controllers, and a few more software synths. Hardware synths next.
