Meebleeps Freaq FM — 2 voice generative FM & inexpensive!

This is fun.

These videos add other stuff, like Volca drums, and some effected, but so what, you get the idea.

The FM is simple, 8 bit, and the generative sequences are 16 notes, with polymetrics. Listening through the videos shows some interesting creations.

Price : inexpensive, see site below. They are sold-out at the moment.

That does look fun!

There is a hint of the Ellitone E[64] to this, different but similar. Certainly in the fun factor.

Anyone got their hands on one of these who can give some real world feedback? Not many demos online!

Just started typing a reply and realised you probably already saw me talking about it today on the M8 discord

For others though, this thing is awesome. Especially when paired with a nice reverb. I played with it for two hours today with no break, and managed to get it to play nice making a few styles of music - ambient, early Warp IDM, then some pretty menacing industrial techno. The controls are basic and the sequence can’t be manually edited, but I like that. It also has a drone mode but I feel like the sequencer is an essential part of the device.

Some very minor things:

  • The output is mono, on the tip only despite the socket being TRS. No big deal since it definitely benefits from being put through effects, but it means you can’t just plug headphones in, and if your effects unit expects a stereo signal, it’ll only come through in the left channel.

  • It’s also quite loud, and has no volume control so I had to put a limiter in the chain on my MS70CDR so it wouldn’t make the reverb clip!

  • The sync input is basically a kind of tap tempo, no matter what resolution is used. This means it doesn’t really play well with an irregular clock signal, for example from 0-ctrl. This is a shame, since I wanted to do some wonky stuff with it. It still sounds pretty interesting as it tries to catch up though, so maybe I’ll use it like that anyway.

Definitely not dealbreakers, considering what it is capable of. Highly recommended

Confimed fun!

Built my kit today and played around before reading the manual. Quite intuitive but the manual is really good and in depth and highlights some things I missed/misunderstood.

A few little annoyances but no deal-breakers.

It would be nice to have access to some more scales (eg minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor) and non natural tonic notes to align with existing tracks. Still heaps of fun! Keen to play more.

For someone like myself who loves generative music and happy accidents, I can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for something like this.

I bought two and have them synced to an E-RM multiclock. I spent a few hours experimenting and had a blast. Pre-built and shipped from Australia, packaged well, and worth checking out!

Just built 2 DIY kits.

Very fun little things. Some excellent sounds to be found. Simple yet deep. Sounds brilliant through some fx.

Very addictive.
