My setup is missing a flexible sampler for melodic color and variance for arrangement. Considering Octa or Machine…I have read the threads considering Octa…great tips ( as a hub to external gears, per step loo and 2fx) and descriptions and at times daunted my the steps and menu “diving” involved but my intuition and imagination is compelling me to lean towards it, even though I have not experienced. I don’t know much about Maschine besides that it’s a stand alone digital sampler packed with fx. Hoping to hear your opinions and suggestions. ( I attempt to create dub house but hope to create immersive ambient dub/ dub house/ hybrid like tracks Ala Pole - not there yet:)
it’s not Standalone. it’s rely side by side to a computer environment. Octatrack is standalone and rely on anything but itself.
You give not sufficient informations to reply the good way and give advises to you. I worked on Both Maschine Studio and Later on Octatrack. I can give you advises. What’s your equipment in your studio? How you like to working ? Do you plan to make Live Performance ? Are you already familiar with Music making on the computer ? Have you got other Elektron devices ? is Working outside or Nomadism Music making is important to You ? What computer do you have ?
I have machindrum, volca keys and fm, lxr sonic machine, Yamaha rs-7000 and and a Sony handyman with a line in for recording and Live on a Mac.
Do you plan to make Live Performance ?
Yes, for multi tracking
Just the basics via Live but limited experience with the computer as a production hub.
Have you got other Elektron devices ?
Just got Machinedrum.
no I have not taken my gears outside my space.
Mac Powerbook (2013 16g )
…and thank you for responding and informing me that the Machine is not a standalone.
I would be interested in performing outside/in nomadism…at the moment more focusing to achieve the sound I imagine.
When i said Live Performance i mean Live act with an audience. Didn’t mean Ableton Live the software
lol …yes, I am
Honestly with the reply you make i would go to an Octatrack. Because you have a Machinedrum and you already familiar with Elektron. You haven’t got Overbridge devices enabled (in this case i would probably tell you to Maschine Studio could be an option) and Your computer if it’s from 2013 (powerbook) … i would not going to devices would require a lot and rely on the computer. If you plan to play live with an audience i would not rely on a powerbook from 2013. Octatrack is real reliable device and you can count on this device as the central piece of hardware setup.
Octatrack will open your creative spirit more than Maschine studio wich is like Ableton inside Ableton with workflow enhancements.
Thank you for consultation…( I always appreciated your posts for there direct and detail and pragmatism)
What is the function of Overbridge?
Another thing to note with the Octa is you might get the tone/ loop right you can always plug that idea in your DAW and either use a dynamics processor or slice again in live to redo the dynamics of the playing. OT is great for making that new loop out of your old sounds but sometimes you itch to fix the dynamics. If you already have live maschine studio maybe redundant.
Overbridge is a bridge between Ableton Live and Hardware device from Elektron (Analog Rytm, Analog Four, Analog Heat and Digitakt) where you control and get separate audio tracks without a soundcard. But it works differentfly for each people because it’s depend also of the computer config of each person. For me it’s working flawlessly for others it’s working not as fine as me apparently.
Good point. Thank you.
Yes Digitakt might be an option too. But less power.
Ok. I see your point about the subjectivity of the software and expertise as well. Thank you
I see your dilemma:) and hard for me to justify having both on top of no practical experience with the hardware. Padwise, the Yamaha is functional at the moment despite the boxy nature of the sound ( I have been marginally successful tweaking it and motion recording the pads)…thank you for sharing your experience.
True…However, the live tweaking of audio in by octatrack is what eliminated the Digitakt…otherwise if it had a live sampling option I would have considered it.
In my opinion for OTB definitely go with Octatrack. It really is great for a lot of things.
ITB not s much, and that’s the reason why mine is up for sale.
Maschine is more versatile according to my research but you need a computer to run it.
OTB = Mostly Working hardware based setup
ITB = Working all inside the DAW
I tend to buy now only Hybrid device because i like to have all options.
