Making Psytrance with the Rytm

Anybody got some good tips on making a wobble bass sound and maby some synths

wobble bass in psytrance? scratches head One man’s wobble is another man’s wibble.

you might want to post an example of what you are referring to.

Standard wobble bass is just modulation of the filter.

If you are talking about that ever present ā€˜dugga dugga’ bass on psytrance, it’s usually just a saw or square with a really snappy filter envelope on every16th note, usually with the either the note on the kick or the one before it being slightly lower volume to give it that pumping feel. there are a million different ways to get to a place, but the simplest is the best.

There are a million psytrance bassline tutortials out there though.

I find most of it, too much by the numbers these days (and that’s as a DJ who’s been playing it since Goa in the early 90s), so I’d recommend coming up with as fresh a sound as possible.

Break some rules.

What you call ā€œwobbleā€, is probably mostly filter modulation (as polite_society says above).

Yes that’s what i meant, isn’t it kind of a wobble? it’s a pitch modulation right?

Could be pitch. Whatever works best for that part.

There are a whole load of modulation destinations, set up an LFO and see what happens when you target some of the less obvious ones.

Ok thank you very mutch for your help. See you around the forum, peace

One thing I’ve not been able to crack on the Rytm, is a psy-trance kick drum. I’ve had to resort to using samples.

My Tempest does a reasonable job, but the best kicks I’ve generated myself actually come from NI’s Massive.

…which is why, so far, when I’m producing in that mode, I don’t tend to use the Rytm.

For me, Rytm works best for more chilled psychedelia.

I had a Electribe that did a real good job of producing the kick and bass but the rytm doesn’t seem to be able to pull it off… Yet

Maybe a new mode for kicks would work?

Yeah maybe get a modulation to pitch with speed adjustment options

Yall use the filter ping psy kick trick yet? IMO it’s great. Set up an impulse machine, set filter to lpf, reso almost to max (or max). Build the kick shape with the filter env. Bonus points for using the LFO for extra filter control. Earth shaking bass!

Will try asap, thank you

Yep - I’ve tried it. I’ve used other synths in the past for that effect (e.g. SH101).

Still not getting what I’m after and using the filter to self-oscillate, means that the starting point of the sound becomes inconsistent. I’d have to sample it.

If I’m after a traditional psy-kick, I’ll either use Massive and take a sample, or I also get pretty good results from my DSI Tempest.

if you use the filter env and set it to reset on trig from the settings, it will be fairly consistent.

I’ve tried all that (have been working with synths for nearly 30 years, so know my way around sound-design). Still not getting what I’m after I’m afraid.
