Making perfect loops with decay tails?

I asked this question in the digitakt tips thread but it applies to any sampler.

If I sample a sequence with a decay or reverb tail how can I make it loop without cutting off the tail?

I have been using two tracks and alternating the same sample which allows the tail to play out but this is cumbersome.

I’m sure I saw someone mention sampling the second loop of a sequence which makes sense but
Would it also make sense to sample the first and second loop of a sequence, this way the sample enters normal and you only loop the second half.

Is this what people are doing? What is the technique for perfect loops?

Tarekith shared a good tip that he starts sampling on the second time the loop plays through so that the effects tails are part of the loop when it comes back around.

Of course, if you are dependent on gated recording then you’ve probably already lost this battle, but it’s fairly simple to do it the “old fashioned way” by manually starting the sample recording on the “come around” after the loop has played through once already and then just trimming the start point in the recorder (sample edit) screen and later doing fine adjustment of the end point using the length parameter from the trig page.

If the trig length is set to the correct loop length then it won’t play beyond that length and is thus the same end result as using the gated automatic sample recording technique, although I find gated recording often cuts the beginning of the first hit anyways.

Hope that helps.

I think that must have been the same comment I saw.

Ok I’ll have to give this a try with the digitakt, and experiment a bit.

I wonder if there is a software out there that deals with cutting and prepping samples, I know any daw can do this but maybe something simple for cutting and exporting batches of samples and loops etc.

Just an idea:

Sample two bars of the loop, then p-lock the sample start to 60 (exactly the middle of the loop) after the first bar and trig the loop again. Should work in theory.

reaper can do this pretty easily

if you have access to fl studio, you can use slicex to cut and batch export samples as well

theres also sox which may be a bit more involved if you arent someone who does things via command line but it can be a handy utility, but im mentioning it as i dont think many people on this forum know of it

I think I need to get in front of the digitakt to wrap my head around it but I get the idea.

Same here :joy:. My DT2 is currently 600 km away from me.

If a Digitakt samples a decay tail but your 600km away from it, did it even sample?

I know the feeling I just got mine back from the dreaded screen fail.

Incidentally, the magic number 60 is always the middle, regardless of how many bars the loop has. I am eternally grateful to the Elektronauts for this information buried somewhere in the depths of this forum.

Good to know, I’ll commit it to my memory. Maybe one day I shall pass the knowledge down again.

Don’t know if a digitakt can do this but I always use a keyboard style sampler that has adsr envelopes to give a release tail. If it can handle polyphony it will just over lap the tail with the new trigger. Just need to record a few bars of the loop
