Making a template; looking for general advice

Hi all,

I’ve used EZBOTS template for a while and liked it but since my setup / workflow probably is a bit different I end up changing stuff, like freeing up static slots for sample chopping, causing the scenes to stop working etc.

Now in a advanced stadium of Octatrack Usage I am looking to make my own template.
Lots of Vids on effects (again, credit for EZBOT here with the Daft Punk effect) but I am looking for general advice.

So far I got:

  • General Midi Settings
  • Dreadbox Typhon Midi + CC’s
  • Tru+neighbour for Digitakt (my drumcomputer/short sampler) and Try+neighbour for Typhon
  • 1 flex track recording Master + a scene to switch to the recording
  • 2 static tracks for chopping / long stuff, but I might kill some NB tracks if I don’t need them.

So, keen on hearing some good rule of thumbs/ tips for good FX combos, standard LFO’S (I’ll get the side chain one on the Typhon for sure)

Thanks!

For long sustained sounds like pads/chords I like flanger into reverb. LFO to delay and feedback on the flanger, LFO the pan just a little bit. HP the dark reverb to stop it getting muddy.

Make your own LFO shapes, honestly, its one of the most underated features. Hold down every trig and hit tempo to interpolate every step then just draw shapes. Apply this to where ever. Way more interesting than the standard shapes.

Generally I have found using the parametric eq for sound shaping yeilds more pleasing results than the filter. I have one band set up as a notch, the other as a low or high shelf depending what kind of sound. EQ then compressor on the master sounds really nice.

Thanks! Exactly the type of answer I was hoping for!!
