macOS Sequoia

Apples new system has all the vowels in it, but how does your music software behave with it? is everything running fine, or did you discover any showstoppers?

been discussed a bit here:

works very smooth for me (studio m1 ultra), everything I use runs with zero issues - Live 12, bunch of plugins I have (obviously didn’t test every one but so far none of the PA/FabFilter/TDR and more works just fine), MOTU interface, TouchDesigner, etc., gotta say that feels smoother then Ventura/Sonoma, they probably worked on optimization quite a bit.

so far I’ve only seen people report issues with Sononym in the linked thread, didn’t see anywhere else reports for showstoppers.

…meanwhile, the everlasting rule persists…don’t be a first adopter if u still got unfinished business…

i don’t feel any need to update for now, since the real new deal with this one only starts with version
x .1 or x.2…this x.0 is an overall test run even for apple…

I have a MacBook Air M2 that’s still running the firmware it came with. I only use it for making music and so far everything is running fine. I don’t want to risk that by updating. Is there any reason I should for my use case, as long as Ableton, my interface, Transfer and Overbridge are still running fine?

no reason whatsoever, if it works it works, the only reason might be if one of the software stops working in the future after update, like if there’s os update for one of the elektrons and you have to update ob too but it requires newer macos, or for some reason Live decides it needs new macos

Good to hear, that was my thought as well, glad to be confirmed. I only make these updates for security reasons on my Iphone as well, the extra stuff that usually comes with it is always unnecessary bloat that at worst makes UI and workflows worse. Don’t wanna have that on my music making machine.

you can still receive security updates for the current os until it’s EOL, usually when you go to the Software Update section it will be at the bottom, there should be a horizontal upgrade path for every os for good amount of years

Ah you mean I can select to only install security updates?

off topic: Still using my trusted Iphone8 which still receives updates. Glad that it’s small and still has the fingerprint button. If it breaks, I will get an SE 2 that’s basically the same.

yes, for example if you’re on macos 14 you can continue updating to 14.1, 14.2, 14.3 etc., these mostly will be security updates, you don’t have to update to 15

There is a point where some software might not be compatible with your OS because it’s too old, but that’s usually quite a few years. I tend to upgrade mine a couple of months before the next one comes out and that’s worked well for me so far

There’s a new version of Sononym out, 1.5.6 that fixes the issue with Sequoia. I just installed it and am back in action.

I updated to Sequoia last week and had no problems with anything. That includes: Logic Pro, MainStage, Ableton Live 12 Suite, plugins by Arturia, Korg, NI, Physical Audio, Rhizomatic, Expressive E, SSL, Eventide, Valhalla, and Expert Sleepers.

Updated day one for the first time since 2014.
Sporting a MB M1 Pro.
At the moment, no issues.
Logic, Wavelab, all the third party plugins.
Will update if anything happens.

Updated a few days ago, Logic Pro and Arturia apps are working just fine. Excited to try out iPhone screen linking, and hoping iPads are added soon.

Finale (score writer) is going out of business and is no longer providing support for its product. They are suggesting a “cross-grade” to Dorico, another score writer. They sent all past/present Finale users an email saying that Finale will still work on older versions of Mac OS but will most likely break after the upgrade to the new Mac OS.

Not my problem. I use Linux and the Gnu LilyPond score writer.

Is anyone using an Apogee Symphony Mk 1? Everything okay post-update?

MIDI over bluetooth seems to be broken. It affects some of my gear e.g. Woowebox.

cant find anywhere if overbridge is working with sequoia yet, has anyone upgraded/tried it yet?
