MACKIE 1202VLZ4 any thoughts?

Another question - I finally picked one up and I’m using headphones in the headphone jack while I wait for speaker connector cables to get here. Is it normal that I only hear channels that are soloed? The manual mentions solo tracks in the section on setting headphone volume, but it’s not explicit about this and I want to confirm this is expected behavior. Thanks!

I think it should/can alternatie between main and solo on your headphones.

I’m not fully sure cause not with my mixer now but you could try and see if these buttons also affect what the headphone output plays:

Yes the headphone mix comes from the Control Room Source. Just punch in all those buttons and you’ll be good to go  In all seriousness, probably just the Main Mix one will get you what you want. It’s a flexible system, congrats on the purchase

@Affectionate-Bee-781 @lesstalkmoredisco thank you! I was messing with the control room source buttons last night with not luck, I’ll mess with them some more later tonight!

These days the 802VLZ4 power supply is just a fairly small wall wart jobber. But I remember the big proprietary ones they used to have…

Really?? Curious if I already have the relatively new smaller one or still the older. Will look around online  Mine does have some kind of seemingly proprietary plug (round with a couple of pins in it)

PS @DonovanDwyer I’ve got this one as listed now on Thomann which I would guess mine is already the smaller newer one?

He 802 has a special power connector. Iirc the 1202 has a standard one.

Mackie VLZ mixers are solid, dependable workhorses. Always have been, always will. Certainly good enough for getting music things done

Update: thanks all, I got it working! I have no idea what happened, there aren’t that many different combinations of four two-position buttons, but the normal mix is coming through the headphones now. Super stoked on this small heavy thing.

Yeah they must have changed it at some point. I actually have two recent-produced 802s and they both have these:

There’s a couple of other small differences that I’ve noticed from Thomann’s pictures as well.

Ah that does look better yeah

Could also be a US / EU thing

Question - I’ve read several reports of people experiencing problems with balance in stereo channels in this particular mixer (i.g. signal not being perfectly in center but rather shifted slightly towards one side when set to middle position).
Is it something that you noticed as well? Or perhaps it’s been sorted out during the years?

Yes it is still an issue and Mackie doesn’t seem willing to fix it.

Anyone done the aux2 pre-fader mod? I thought I saw it referenced in the manual but can’t find any info on it now.

I also have this issue. I don’t really pan my instruments much so I’ve just got them all set to 11 o’clock to even then out.

From my experience with the 1604VLZ4, pressing any of the PRE FADER SOLO(PFS) buttons on the channels, will make those channels soloed in the Control Room Mix. You need all of them to be disengaged to hear the sum of all the channels in the Control Room Mix.
I think the manual mention something about the PFS buttons being there to be able to visually inspect on the LED meter the input level of a channel while gainstaging

That feels wrong to me somehow. My earlier revision VLZ has the locking connector on the PSU, I’d feel a bit anxious using those newer revision mixers in more chaotic venues
