Machinedrum SPS-1 MKI (to buy or not to buy)

sup folks - this week i have the opportunity to purchase a Machinedrum SPS-1 MKI locally for $1000USD. asked the gentleman to come down from $1250 and he agreed. I’m familiar with the limitations: PSU sourcing issues, 32 steps only, unbalanced outputs, higher noise floor etc. Truth be told i reeeeaaallllyyy want an SPS-1 MKII. But none are available locally, or online for less than $1800. most are outside the USA too which subjects me to those wonderful tariffs/import duties.

I suppose my question is: in 2026, is the SPS-1 MKI worth $1000USD? would any of you jump at that opportunity? and if i one day find a good deal on a MKII, how easy will it be for me to break even on this MKI?

The availability of replacement parts for MKI is always going to be lower than a MKII because Elektron no longer services or sells parts for MKI, they do currently have limited repair service for MKII. It’s not just the power supply, it’s that the power supply uses 6 volts AC and not DC power so it is different internally as well.

You would have to make your own decision regarding the price. If the shorter sequence length of MKI won’t impact you then it should be the same interaction as you’ll get with any non-uw machinedrum and you can still use it with MCL as an upgrade.

There’s nobody who can determine worth outside of you personally. You can compare it against the market and other sales, but the prices on machinedrum are pretty silly in general, just don’t say that to someone who doesn’t want to hear it.

With the “market” the way that it is, you likely won’t get a functional one for much less than $900 and you’ve probably already seen some of the upper numbers of what people ask, but what people are asking $2500 for has sometimes already been for sale for like 3 years so that should tell you some of those prices are way too high.

The production numbers were statistically low and they aren’t making any more of them and the price will probably not be going down so If this is something you can afford and intend to stick with then nobody can tell you it’s not worth it for you however a mixed group of biased elektron fetishists might give you a different answer than a Roland Aira person or whomever, so it really is better to get the information and decide for yourself.

I’d say that the price is within +/- $200 of average for a non-uw mkI, but that if you’re patient you can probably find a non-uw mkII for $1200 and that for thoughts towards the longevity of the device and the longer sequence length it might be worth waiting, but if you want the one for sale now and you want to purchase now and not later, you need to decide if opportunity is enough of a motivator to close the deal.

For me, sometimes it is, but that for a vintage instrument (if the machinedrum is vintage?) Particularly older stuff from the 70’s and 80’s that you have to let some opportunities pass before you find the right one at the right price. So for this opportunity, if the price aligns with your expectations then grab it, otherwise be patient in looking for a mkII. In my opinion I would not expect to pay much less than $1000 but that you might get significantly more for like $1200 if you’re patient.

As to reselling it, if it doesn’t crap out on you then I think getting $1k back out of it private sale is totally possible, but read about black screen issues and garbled screen characters so you know some of the common issues to look out for. Also jumpy jog wheel behavior or one stereo channel being slightly louder than the other. All things that indicate something is failing,

I have a different take on this. Vintage gear(which it will become) definitely has a place in the future. So if it works now and you look after it then its ‘value’ to you is absolutely yes.
