M8 Tracker

A mastering engineer pal turned me on to these…
Surprisingly good for for earbuds. They come with a bunch different size/types of cups (is that what the earpiece things are called?) to dial in fit. Once I chose the correct ones for me, I’ve been pleased with the sound.

I have the version with slightly extended bass response, they are in fact very good. It is a bit unfamiliar n the beginning because they need to be introduced quite profoundly into the ear.

I have these there great once you get used to them been buried into your skull, very isolating so be careful of sound levels!

Hola folks. I’ve been looking for a comprehensive look at the M8’s sampling features, but haven’t found quite what I’m looking for. Better yet, I’d love a video or other resource that compares the Polyend Tracker’s sampler to the M8 trackers to see which one is better at modifying sample sources.

The main reason I ask is that I’ve been producing on Renoise, and you can mangle a sample in so many ways, especially with FX chains and modulators on things like volume, pitch, etc. Taking a look at the M8’s manual, I see there are two envelopes and two LFOs available for each instrument, but what can I modulate with those envelopes and LFOs? I mostly saw sample start, playback type, etc. Is there an ADSR in the sampler? Ways to modulate pitch? I didn’t see one in the manual, but perhaps I didn’t look well enough?

step modulation, & tables. loads u can do with them. can plock to other tables within a table too etc. can modulate sample pitch, start point, length, direction, etc per step. there’s 2 assignable envelopes which u can modulate.

dirtywave’s youtube discord meet up vids are what u want imo. they go thru everything & Tim it really funny n sound too. Ess makes a few appearances

Let me say this. NO COMPARISON. Get the M8… if you can :))

I had the PT and the M8 is much much better. I bought it exactly for its sampling capabilities, but also the synths sound super super !!! The Reverb and Analog (emulated) distorsion is also nice.

In the latest update you can slice samples manually. Initially you could just divide them into equal regions but now you can slice them by transients or manually, and save them into the wav file. Including loop points.

The sequencer is also way cooler because with one 1 bar phrase you can build a 4 bar clip, altering the 1 bar phrase at each repetition. So it’s super dope… I totally recommend it.

the instrument parameters are also way more complex.

Meetup Timestamps (notion.so)

This a list of all the discord meetups, with labeled timestamps around the various changes and updates. As @pidgeo mentions, it is the best, and most comprehensive, place to get beyond the manual.

Doing a search for sampl on the page leads to a bunch of hits walking through various aspects of the sampler.

Yes I was going to post this. It’s the most helpful thing.

And yeah, the effects on this, especially the Reverb to me sound fantastic. I was very impressed with it compared to other samplers I use.

Yeah the reverb sounds great for kind of an airy sparkle, I can get a passable dark verb messing with the settings but it does feel lacking in that area to me… Digitakt reverb is a pretty huge leap ahead for that sort of sound I think, ends up sounding more like a thick gassy reverb but a reverb I could imagine in a real space. The dark verbs I can get on the M8 dont feel “real” if that makes any sense.

im so glad this is doing well and I want to pick one up eventually. Last time I used a tracker was Milkytracker like 10 years ago

Agreed on the reverb, though I think the chorus is pretty great. A lot of the time, I use delays and verbs to get the feel right, but turn em way down/off when I render the stems so I can use my plugins during mix. Works fine for me

That works too. I just like that I can automate the FX, which really is powerful. So its kind of like the OT for me I would guess- the effects are not amazing but they way they sound when modulated makes up for it.

Although I heard an FM demo on the M8 and when the guy added the reverb, to me it was F’n glorious.

yea the chorus is great. its one of my favourites actually, as in it always seems to sound good. I never enjoy chorus usually.

digitakt reverb is a lot better, agreed. m8 verb is decent. not my favourite, not the worst either. sounds pretty good with a few tweaks.

I gotta jump on the chorus love train. I avoided it for a while cause I didn’t generally care about chorus but it is really good.

My only thing w the fx is it seems you really have to crank the fx send to hear an effect. Maybe cause my monitoring situation is not great - I can appreciate subtlety tho so not even a complaint just something I work around.

Dumb confession time. I own an OT and love to automate fx, but have yet to do that on the M8. Not for any good reason, just hadn’t crossed my mind. Now if you’ll excuse me…

!!!

Yes for sure, that is a big appeal for me and a reason I am looking forward to buying one.

I like to get all the work done (arrangement, automations, transitions…etc) as much as possible before exporting to the DAW to get mixed. So for this reason I really like the OT, MPC One for my productions. And I think the M8 will also suit me quite well for the same reasons.

same lol. apart from reverb send I haven’t automated fx yet.

dunno why  :joy:

Are automations for global fx step-wise or enveloped? Or both?

They can’t be assigned to envelopes/LFOs, but you can automate them through phrases (per step) or tables (either at a sub step rate or the super fast 400hz mode). Using tables is essentially like having more LFOs/envelopes.

I personally disagree about the reverb not being very good but I am biased. Example

A4/Rytm/Digi* was the gold standard when I was working on the algorithm but I did not have the ram to do pre-delay which is where I feel it lacks. It’s pretty good for what it is but it’s far from Valhalla. Deluge and OT(for good reason) are examples of reverbs I personally do not like.
