M8 Tracker

So writing can be saved in blocks rather than editing hundreds of lines?

I’ve been using headless and it works pretty similar to Ableton’s clips. You can copy/paste chains and phrases, clone them, or just enter the same number in really easily. It’s a fast way to work imo.

Cool.

I was just thinking that would be a great feature for a gig - put the m8 output on a projector overlaying some visuals.

Just FYI, if you just now started thinking of ordering one, they’re sold out.

The Discord meetup videos show a lot of workflow examples. I don’t have exact timings but the workflow seemed pretty fast. Would be nice to see a true ā€œfrom complete scratch to trackā€ video sometime, though.

In this video, we see a user explain that he wants to rewrite some parts for his song, then build a drum pattern - almost from scratch. To get the basic beat set up looked really quick - most of the time was spent setting up effects and the like for it. He then sets up a chord pattern from scratch - but not sure how useful this bit is for estimating speed of workflow, as the chords are actually samples of a Juno 106 chord - they’re not note events triggering the internal synth engine.

I would imagine if you wanted to sequence 4-note chords using an internal synth, you’d have to enter each of the 4 notes individually. If the chords you want are all the same type, like, say, minor 9th, then you might have to only enter all 4 notes once, then copy-paste the chords, which would save quite a bit of time. Then you just go back and transpose each chord that you want to be in a different key.

That all said, I may have missed something in the M8 videos.

Are up for one as well? Im not sure at the moment as the Polyend maybe better for an oldie like me. I had a Gameboy back in the 90’s. Golden Sun and Advance Wars. Great memories.

Well, M8 is sold out on the website.

I dunno if it’ll have a game emulator like the Polyend.

Thats the thing. They have a legacy )

Well, I dunno if the M8 Tracker will give you the Gameboy experience that the Polyend might.

Anyway you can’t order an M8 so I guess its a moot point for you

It doesnt matter because i have too much stuff at the moment. But maybe when they fix all the initial bugs that are likely to happen ill jump on board. I do think it has Gameboy appeal that you cant get away from though.

Are you talking about the Polyend or the M8?

I don’t get it, but good luck man. I’m getting nagged by the forum software for talking to you too much, so peace out.

Just got around to catching up on the Discord videos, the new features look amazing. I was secretly hoping for a 2nd LFO and I’m over the moon it’s forthcoming - it really opens up the (already massive) sound design possibilities. Plus, I didn’t realise how much flexibility (and cool sounding) being able to set the Phase Position of the FM engine has.

I’ve been playing catch-up on the Discord Meet-Ups now that they have timestamps and there are so many interesting tips. I’ve especially enjoyed stealing the settings for some of the FM patches by @Ess

I think it’s got a pretty quick workflow being honest - although it’s a different workflow to an Elektron box (e.g. the Digitakt) it’s still pretty quick and you can really spend as much time as you want to fine-tuning a song. But to get the basics up and running, it’s pretty quick. I’d never used an LSDJ style tracker before I got mines and I was up and running really quickly with just the Quick Start guide… with all the tutorials available within the Discord Meet-ups on the Dirty Wave youtube channel I’d imagine it would be even quicker.

There are a few ways you can achieve chords. A few of the MacroSynth modes allow you to detune oscillators to create chords but there was a tip on how to use tables to creates chords using the FM synth that I thought was really cool. Hopefully this link is timestamped properly (if not, it’s at 33:11).

Thanks

The use of a Table to manipulate chords appears to work very well with voice-leading concepts. Looking forward to playing with that. Cheers!

Agree! I bought a gameboy just to be sure though

I still have a Game Boy Color lying around somewhere.

I don’t recall a game emulator being promised for M8 Tracker though, which I think sabana was thinking - can’t be sure though.

I think ā€œgameboy appealā€ simply referred to the form factor and not the ability to play games on it.

Also thanks for linking my video! I think I did end up making chords with the FM engine later on, but that may have been in another stream. The latest update has more wave shapes for the FM operators, which gives even more freedom for chord sound design.
