I just realized that there’s never been a dedicated topic for Lorre Mill, so here it is. I probably won’t be communicating on here that much (I struggle with typing and keeping up with conversations in this format) but it would be nice to have a place for people to post sounds, patches, and speculate on future Lorre Mill designs. For instance, is anyone interested in the up-coming Comb Room?
I wasn’t completely convinced by the sound clips that were posted on the Lorre Mill site, but I also felt the same way about the Double Knot V3 initially, and now it’s become one of my favorite pieces of gear. The Comb Room’s panel and patchable controls speak to the versatility and thoughtfulness put into the design, so I’m eager to hear how people end up using it.
I hadn’t heard of the Comb Room before but this looks rad.
What are some of your favorite things about the Double Knot? I’ve observed it from afar for a while but haven’t had the chance to play with one yet, hoping to do so at some point.
For me it’s a few things- patching on it is really fun and satisfying and makes me think about synthesis in a different way, and I also really like the sound. It has a rawness that reminds me of Serge, but it’s self-contained and more limited (yet still surprisingly versatile) It’s also a fraction of the price of a Serge system.
Yeah the price of the Comb Room is very good considering it’s banana format.
Lorre Mill stuff is really cool! I previously owned the Double Knot 2 but let it go when I did a slim down but I think I’ll probably pick up a DK3 down the line. Some of the things that bugged me about the DK2 have been addressed (the unavoidably clicky envelopes) but the new one lost a few features that I really liked (logic, inverted envelopes). I think they’re very cool little devices - awesome for techno along with Serge-esque weirdness.
Yeah, I don’t know why those were emitted. The improvement on the envelopes was my biggest reason for replacing the dk2 with the dk3, but sometimes I wish I had both.
I finally had some time to sit down with the Comb Room. It wasn’t my intention initially but I ended up making a lot abstract noise. I think this is where the CR excels though. It’s raw and noisy by nature.
Btw, sorry to those who don’t use
Instagram. I tried to upload a compilation video directly but it was too large of a file, even when I downsized it considerably.
Hadn’t really looked properly at Lorre-Mill stuff until very recently, but I’m doing a lot of research into chaotic systems at the minute and this seems perfect for achieving a lot of my (non-laptop based) goals right now.
Thank you! I lost my focus these days though. It’s a constant search for new challenges. Otherwise I get bored easily. Theoretically Max would be perfect but I’m still not a big fan of using computer, even if I try my best!
But yeah these kinds of instruments are very fun and clever!
I recently re-acquired a Double Knot, this time an MK3. I love what the additional slew circuits bring to the table! I’ve been using it to fill the space that would normally be held by a 303 in techno. Obviously the DK sounds totally different than a 303 (no filter among a zillion other differences) but the slew allows for certain amount of rubberiness that still feels like acid to me.
Here’s a techno track using the Machinedrum, Double Knot MK3, and modular. DK comes in around the 20 second mark.
Your post and song led me to buy one! Is there some place you looked to help you learn it? I’m just reading the manual but it’s a little above my head…the videos I’ve seen are too.
So far I’m just copying the patches from the manual and playing around.
I wish there were a simple tutorial that explained the basics on a basic level! I love how it sounds so far!
This is exactly the series I was going to recommend. Allie’s videos are great and even though there are some differences between the MK1 and MK3 the concept of shift registers and how they work on the Double Knot is still the same.
@ddiamond84 are you familiar with digital shift registers in general? That would be a good place to start for learning about the Double Knot. Omiindustriies has some good videos on digital shift registers that are specifically about her eurorack modules but I remember she does a good job of breaking down what is happening with them.
