I’m all in on Ableton and the Push 3, and I absolutely love it. I’m using it with a Launchpad pro off to the side for session clip launching, and the odd custom layout, and an 88-key midi piano keyboard.
But for mobile use, I think Logic for iPad is incredible. The synths and sounds, the beat repeat, the FX, and the fact that you can just grab and go. I also like Logic on the Mac for arrangement duties, and its new mastering plugin is amazing.
Since getting the Push 3, and also learning to play the piano, I came to realize that I really like to be able to play an instrument. I feel a connection with the piano that I can’t get from a sequencer, and the Push’s MPE brings this to another level.
I have played guitar for years, and I’m pretty good at it, and love how expressive it is (especially the electric), but I never managed to reconcile it with electronic music.
I sample it, or play it and use guitar parts in my compositions, but with the keys and Push I find I can actually play and improvise with experimental sounds in a way I can’t with the guitar.
Coming back to the point, Logic on the iPad is becoming a perfect replacement for the OP-1 F. The on-screen keys and strings offer plenty of expression, although I would like to try a small MPE controller at some point.
