Little shop of horror(movie)s etc

By popular demand, I’ll start a dedicated thread on my second hand pop culture shop in Turku Finland (Yliopistonkatu 38, pop in if you’re in town).

I’ve been in graphic design/illustration business for basically all my adult life. First I drew comic strips for a living and it soon evolved into a full blown career in advertising. For a couple of years now, I’ve been fed up with working in that field. I don’t want to spend my life encouraging people to consume stuff they don’t really need. Last three years working mostly in food advertising finally cracked the camel’s back (is that even an expression in english?) and I needed to find something else to do in my life than photoshopping chicken burgers as a vegetarian. It was against my nature and my values.

18 months ago I heard from a friend that my favourite second hand book store which has huge selection of vinyl, movies, comics and other pop culture related stuff, was up for sale. The previous owner is turning 70 this year and is ready to finally retire. For a long time the shop has been dwindling just barely getting by and the owner has been basically retired for the last five years and he’s been running the shop as a hobby. For over a year I’ve been working hard filling applications etc. with the goal of buying the shop.

Two weeks ago we signed the papers and I got the keys to my dream job. I paid a hefty price for it but for the amount of stuff included it was peanuts. Even if I sold every single item for one euro each, I’d make a fortune and a huge profit, but I’ve already found stuff like a Frank Frazetta lithography, three mint copies of very rare local death metal (Funebre) lps and dozens of unopened boxes of 90s comic book themed collector cards, during my brief time of owning the shop.

We carried over 400 big cardboard boxes filled with comics, movies, books and records into the basement to make the space more inviting and at the moment I have three and a half huge storage units filled with excellent stock. In the first week I made 150% of the previous owner’s monthly income. It’s been just crazy.

I have a lot of thoughts on what a second hand book store could be in the 2020s. I’ll start new sections in the store for RPGs, vintage video games and maybe even second hand music gear. I’m also going to have in-store gigs there, hopefully I’ll get some of my dj friends to play gigs (with the twist of them only playing the records from the store) on saturdays and I’ll install a screen and a video projector for having things like Tetris championship games etc. I used to also work in event production in my hometown Turku producing all kinds of weird things for the nightlife. Now I have my own space where I can have any kind of happening whenever I like. The only downside is that I can’t sell beer, but I’ll have a corner for coffee and sitting and reading.

All of my upcoming furniture will have wheels underneath them so I can easily push them against the walls and clear out a dance floor or whatever is needed for the current happening. A lot of intricate plans but I have the rest of my life to make them come true. I’m in no hurry.

You can follow my shop on Facebook and Instagram but most of the content is in finnish I’m afraid. There’s a lot of stuff in the basement that hasn’t seen the light of day since the early nineties and the previous owner never had a web presence so I basically have stuff that’s sold out from Amazon and all the other specialist shops on the planet. It’ll take a lot of time to get my webshop up and running but eventually it’ll be great.

Here’s some pics from my basement storage units. There’s three (and a half) of them and these pics were taken before we filled them even more with the 400 boxes. It’s just plain crazy.

Wishing you all the very very best with it. Looks amazing. If I ever find myself local I’ll definitely pop in.

Looks awesome . Pretty sure the previous owner didn’t use the many options the internet has to offer to promote the shop and maybe sell online . You’ll prolly do a great job !

Looks ace. I recall a statistic that Finland has the highest book sales per capita in the world, so there should be plenty of potential customers. Best of luck with it.

First thing I noticed was that direct market Spider-Man logo where the barcode would have been on that jack of hearts cover (first pic from your second post, bottom right - the one which says ‘heart of the sun’ on it). From the look of things you have a few comics from this era so mid 80’s ish.

This looks like a dream come true for me just for the old comics alone as I grew up buying second hand comics in a store just like this.

If you get the chance I would take the time to try and catalogue some stuff just in case there are any hidden gems in there. For example, while you might not see one issue worth a fortune, you may have multiples of an issue thats getting more sought after and so they add up to a decent amount.

Either way I wish you luck and lots of success.

It’s getting weirder by the moment.

Yesterday we stayed at the shop for an hour after closing up. I went to take out the trash while a good friend and my gf stayed behind. When I came back they were knocking on the walls with their knuckles. My friend had spent one night thinking about the layout of the shop and he had realised that there must be an extra room there as one corridor ended a little short.

After a while of knocking we found a wall that sounded hollow, and took some books from the shelf. In a short while we found the door handle and the door frames. It’s crazy that I’ve owned the place for 2,5 weeks and have worked there every day and still there’s whole rooms that I haven’t found before. You can see the door handle in the middle of the picture. We’ll need to take a couple of bookshelves down to get to it. Maybe it’s a gateway to Narnia or some other alternative dimension. We’ll find out.

Earlier, on the week of renovation we had a similar thing happen. I noticed from the start that one bookshelf had wheels underneath it. My friend had been watching the same shelf and had been wondering why it was so deep. We started thinking and pulled the shelf away from the wall. Behind it there was another shelf facing the wall and filled to the brim with mint condition rare comic books. I feel like frigging Indiana Jones here.

They were talking about mental health and the Pandemic on the radio here in the UK yesterday and a Doctor stated that Finland is the happiest country on Earth at the moment and this is due to what they call “Sisu”. When he explained and gave it a translation, I immediately thought of you @Wolf-Rami !!
I look forward to hearing many happy and amazing tales from Alfa!

If you have the opportunity to find this rare book,
it will complement this mystery chamber story perfectly.

This monday a dude called me. ”Would you be interested in buying…” I interrupted him and told him that all my storage spaces are filled to the brim with stuff and that I’m not currently buying basically anything. He continued: ”Well my father in law has died and he had a collection of old mint condition vinyls and movie posters.” I instantly changed my tone of voice and told him that maybe I could come and take a look after all.

On tuesday night I drove there. A bland apartment building in the suburbs. I had basically very low hopes. I went through the maybe 200-300 pieces of vinyl, picked 50 of the best aside and moved over to the movie posters. I approximated that there was maybe 150 posters alltogehter and made the dude a fair offer for all the vinyl and posters. He accepted it and off I went with my haul. When I got home I had a quick look at the pile of posters and realized that I had hit the motherlode. There were all kinds of classic movie posters and all of them were mint. I went through maybe the top 20 posters but decided to continue in the morning as it was dark and cold in the car.

The next morning I took the haul to my shop and went through the pile. Fuuuuuuuuuck! Bucketloads of all the movie classics ever Apocalypse Now, Taxi Driver, Escape From New York, everything from Tarkovski, Fellini, Pasolini, Bergman etc., mint, with Finnish titles. These posters were going to pay my rent for the next three months. I have a trainee and made her count the pile. It amounted to 714 posters. Hahahahahahahaha! My estimate of 150 was way off.

On top of that the pile of vinyl included for example the legendary holy grail of soul funk LPs Skull Snaps, which I sold today for a measly 180€.

I had the best selling day this far today. People were buying movie posters like crazy. (Also an older dude offered me a vintage synth today as he thought that I dealt in used electronics. I’ll buy it off him for sure.)

I love my job and I love my life.

The scariest book I have ever read. Properly freaked me out for ages afterward.
