Does anyone know how LFO speeds relate to microtiming? Since they’re both tied to the clock it seems like you should be able to crosswalk between them …
My particular use case: I think I’ve worked out that if a trig is set to play 16 ticks later than “on grid” an LFO with SPD=96 and MULT=64x should complete one cycle before the next trig.
I’m basically trying to use the LFO controlling VOL to perform a crossfade. Fade out with the above, the fade in on the next trig.
Which lfo trig mode ?
Does that impact the LFO rate in some way?
I’m assuming that a one shot LFO would start at the microtimed point of the trig. Is that right?
My thinking is that I can use LFO Designer to make an LFO that is max for the first 15 steps (1/2 tick each), then 0 for the 16th. That should be a pretty quick fade out. Then the opposite on the start of the next trig ramping back up.
I don’t think so, maybe I don’t get the purpose.
Lfo triggered by trigs will start from trigs that triggers lfos. Lfo can be triggered by track beginning with Sync Trig or Sync Half, otherwise it is free running with Free or Hold (fixed value)…
This is the kind of thing that I’m going for (still the occasional click!):
It is a one-bar long recording buffer that is doing sound-on-sound recording (record and play trigs on trig 1). On trig 15 I restart the loop on 2:8. On trig 9 I restart it on 5:8. And on trig 3 I restart it on 8:8. That makes the loop collapse onto itself.
I have trigless trigs on 2, 8, 14, and 16 that fade the audio out (microtimed to +1/24 with LFO Deigned LFOs running at SPD = 96, MULT=64X). And the trigs on 1, 3, 9, and 15 fade the audio in. The goal is to have a really quick fade out and a quick fade in, but only when needed.
It is working pretty well … but there are still a few click gremlins I’m chasing. I’m not entirely sure what the right trig mode is for the ones that fade the audio back in.
I can’t quite get it to work the way I imagine with LFO Designer. So close, but there’s always one weird glitch. I think it has to do with step 16 in the LFO Designer, but I’m not totally sure.
Using a SAW and ISAW LFO it works pretty close to how I imagine it, though I can’t get the crossfades as short as I’d like. I’ll keep thinking about this one since it would unlock some functionality that I hope the OT can do.
One of these days you’re gonna fuck around and create a wormhole with that Octatrack.

Good news! It gets worse, but you get used to it.
I can’t get the LFO Designer version to work. As a workaround, I ended up cranking up the tempo so that the SAW and ISAW envelopes are shorter.
I’m not entirely sure I’m thinking about this correctly. On the one hand, I think the LFOs are tied to the master clock so I think the fast tempo makes them faster. But the microtiming I’m doing is actually on a scaled down track. So maybe I can shift the microtiming even later in the trig to get faster envelopes. ![]()
Octatrack is now running at 275.6 bpm, but the looping track is running at 1/8X. 32 trig long loop, so this is a much longer loop that eventually eats itself. Trig 25 fires on 3:8, trig 15 on 6:8, trig 3 on 8:8.
So … no clicks, but not quite the envelopes I wanted. It is a lot of fun to improvise into and react to.
This ended up working great. If the track’s scale is at 1x, then the “latest” you can start a one-shot LFO seems to be at +1/24. But if you’re at 1/8x then you can do +23/384.
Anyhow … long story short: Understanding the relationship between LFO and microtiming ended up working out to make my musical dreams real. ![]()
