LCD losing contrast: adjustment?

So, I’ve had my SFX-6 for a long, long time, and the LCD contrast has steadily diminished.

Edit: Nevermind.

This must be a power-supply issue. Whenever I put a bunch of trigs on a track and hit the record button (to show the active trigs), the contrast goes down. Yep, the more LEDs lit, the less contrast.

So, am I screwed? Last I heard, Monomachine SFX-6 spare parts were as rare as women on Fury 161. (Sorry, that’s an Alien 3 reference. Just watched it again.)

There is a trimmer inside the machine that can change the contrast.

A weak screen usually means the pwr supply is on its way out as the screen sucks the most current.

Yeah, as I thought.
The screen flickers from time to time, too. Sometimes I get decent contrast, sometimes it’s a snow-storm in there.

Dang.

How about this:

Thinking the SFX6 just need to “warm up,” I kept it on for hours. And hours.
I periodically pressed some random trigs and other buttons, to kind of “work it out.”

Guess what? The LCD is back to nearly-maximum contrast and power.

Weird.
Maybe the Monomachine is a “machine” in the most literal sense, kinda like my car.

I have the very same behavior with my Roland TD-12!
Maybe it has to do with humidity or faulty solder joints, but letting the device run for an hour makes the fading / “snow storm” go away

It could just be that the trimpot for the LCD contrast has gone iffy. Whereabouts are you based?

Across the sea from you, friend :flag_us:
No worries; I think I’m ok with a flicker, from time to time.

I don’t know if my knobs/encoders would survive a dismantling, anyway.

Were you the one who replaced the screen or knobs or something on your Mono?
Oh, by the way, what’s the best way to go about removing the knobs?

I just had a bit of a nightmare with my Mono but only needed to reseat the internal connectors in the end  Had a good look around inside to see what’s in there whilst I was at it though.

The caps on my encoders came off crazy easily, which was unexpected, but the volume cap was a bit tough. All I recommend is pulling them straight up and not at an angle. I didn’t need to use any tools, but maybe get some plastic spudgers if need be.

Ok! I might give her a try…might. Things have been running smoothly, recently. Kinda crazy considering how hold the thing is and how many problems I’ve heard about. (I did have to replace the CPU/PSU once.)
