Latin Quarter - Latin American Musik Affairs

Cumbia evolution accross Latinamerica is sooo interesting. National Geographic documentary worth. The mexican slow-down give it a “Dub-like” feeling, plus all this syncretism with Mexican own culture… ufff, really deep.

South American variants go slightly in the opposite direction I feel, Peru and Argentina cumbias tend go slightly up-tempo in BPM, toward dancing if not rocking even, when compared with Colombian original cumbias.

Cumbia´s cousins, such as Bullerengue and eventually Champeta rythms, yield solid bases for electro beats. These folks from Ghetto Kumbe are a good example:

Stumbled on this. 10 year old video, but they break down each part. Batucada, samba reggae.

The guy reminds me of William Knifeman from Reservation Dogs (great series)

Experimenting with “Guarapo”.

Guarapo is a slow-down Champeta beat, mostly percussion, almost no lead sounds, just voice. I see it similar to Cumbia vs Cumbia Rebajada, so Guarapo is a Champeta rebajada.

Since we are into synths and stuff… I replaced any vocals with Synth arpeggios.

To keep it real, no fancy stuff was used: The humble Volca Bass is doing all the work with support from Ableton:

There Is, or was, an act in Bogotá, where known DJs and producers get together to put a live improvisation session.

Maquineros de Bacata.

Couple of clips survive as record of those sessions:

Psy-rock, but is Latin And is Cumbia:

Yes, there is a Digitakt involved.

wow, this technique deserves to go into the tips and tricks of all elektron devices  did you already put it there? the topics are divided by gear though, and this could work for all of them i think

Ve gracias, pues yes, I don’t know, I just go around trying stuff with these.

The plocking conditionals + varying track probability is fun for days indeed.

Pretty good article on some very nice synth music. The links in the article are well worth checking out, too.

I discovered this not so long ago, and although it’s a long video, is very entertaining and feels much shorter.
