Korg SQ1 current question

So I’ve invested in a little USB power module for my modular case and I’d like to power my SQ1 with it, among other things, but I can’t find any information about how much current it draws anywhere online.

Anyone got any ideas how many amps this thing draws?

I have no idea if this is helpful, but it might give you an idea. Portabellabz build a little adapter thingy that allows an SQ-1 to be plugged directly into an EMS Synthi A, from which the SQ-1 draws its power when connected. They warn that this mod draws 155 mA from the Synthi’s +12v power rail.

Now, this mod has a few additional components (including a voltage regulator) that may pull a bit more power, but I reckon you can assume that your SQ-1 will draw no more than the 155 mA of the entire mod.

I could, of course, be blowing magic smoke out of my backside. I emailed Constantin (mainman behind Portabellabz, without whom my VCS3 would be in dire shape). He might be able to provide a clear answer.

Legend, cheers for that.

I’ve got a fair bit of headroom anyway, at least a few hundred mA spare for the SQ-1, just wanted to make sure before I turn it on and bollocks up my whole case.

I’m using the Doepfer A-183-9, which draws directly from the +5, which isn’t used by anything else, so even if it does bollocks up it shouldn’t hurt anything else, at least in theory…

Constantin’s reply:

The draw is the SQ-1’s on the Synthi’s +12V rail via the SQ-1 Card’s 7805 regulator only, the added circuitry on the SQ-1 Card is passive

Banging, gonna fire it up now.

Thanks so much for the help.

I would use it with recharchable batteries

This is the beauty of the SQ-01

I mostly do, but I’d like the USB as a backup when I’m playing out, as battery power can be a little inconsistent and unreliable.

Much quicker to plug a USB in than change batteries in an emergency
