Before I go out and by the cable for this does anyone know if sending midi clock out via usb from the rytm to the usb of the sq1 start, stop and sync the sequencer to the tempo of the rytm? Really want to have the choice of using or not using a computer. Cheers
what cable !?! -it won’t work that way
.
do a bit of research on usb host devices
http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/utilities/usb-host.shtml
there are cheaper(and pricier) ways if you scour the internet
.
check the sq1 responds to transport on your computer first or look for a midi implementation chart for it
Cheers avan.
So the usb on the rytm don’t send midi out? I was thinking there might be a square usb to square usb cable. And yes the sq1 responds to midi messages from a computer. I’ll take a look into the kenton cheers
It does, but only sends to a host device (which includes computers, kenton, a teenage engineering product, a few others and things like raspberry pi computers which is what i have used)
.
icconect do one i think and so does this guy http://www.inspektorgadjet.com/cerebelusb/
.
this isn’t a rytm issue, it’s a conceptual one, no cable will do what you want (unless it has the ability to act like a host to both devices on each end)
.
a raspberry pi will be ultra cheap, but you’d need to do some setting up/scripting and it may have some latency
Hey Serum114,
Although the SQ-1 is solid with sync etc. from a computer, unfortunately I found it won’t react to incoming USB MIDI sent from a host to MIDI box (the no computer route)
I’ve tried it with both the Kenton and the Bomebox sending both sync and MIDI notes from OT and Novation Circuit. Unfortunately the SQ-1 doesn’t seem to like em.
You could always send out a drum hit from an individual output from the RTYM into the Sync input on the SQ-1.
Mine is now synced from an MD firing out a high volume/pitch sine instrument with a short decay, I experimented with different sounds as the sync source and found this one seemed to worked well. I reckon the cowbell or a good rim shot would be a decent signal to sync it from the RTYM too.
I place 8th notes on the MD’s sequencer and the SQ-1 advances appropriately in 16ths. I believe there is also a way to change the sync resolution on the SQ-1 too but I haven’t fiddled with that.
If you find a way to do what you originally planned, let me know. I’d really love to use my Circuit for CV sequencing without the need for a computer or having to buy another MIDI to CV box!..
hope that helps.

Impulse machine on the rytm is the way to go probably more solid and flexible than even midi
I tried this, with an impulse machine into the sync in of the RYTM but didn’t work? Is the SQ suppose to start once the impulse sound clicks?
it should, you may need to adjust your impulse machine, I had to use overdrive to get the voltage up enough to trigger
