Korg OPSIX

FM-synthesis is not about real-time physical controls

A little gremlin appears to smack your hands with a ruler every time you try to touch a slider or knob.

Sounds like Phoebe trying to teach Joey how to play the guitar.

hmm, there is a lot of space for adsr faders there

Yeah, these huge empty spaces on the keys really look weird. Makes the synth look a bit cheap imo. Considering they are asking for so much more money for this one, they could have included some more controls and maybe a bigger display. Look at how Elektron used the extra space on DK to add encoders and individual outs!

I don’t get it. Why is the SE price FOUR times higher than the regular OPSIX? It just has a bigger keyboard and more voices, or am I missing something?

It looks pretty in your studio or when playing out. It is made of metal rather than plastic, and has aftertouch. Korg seems to be marketing it at keys players who LOVE FM.

I’m tempted by the silver model, but it would make more sense to patiently wait for a Z1 - which I’ve had previously and loved - since I already have the 37-key OPSIX.

Metal enclosure, aftertouch, metal knobs, carrying case. Made in Japan. I vaguely recall someone mentioning one new operator mode.

I think all the operator modes are on the 37 too, the new mode was introduced in the 2.0 firmware update.

I don’t think there’s a new operator mode.

I think this sums up what’s new in the SE vs the little Opsix.

The opsix SE takes this even further. It is equipped with Korg’s premium 61-key natural-touch keyboard, complete with aftertouch, delivering the exceptional tactile experience expected from Korg’s flagship workstations. With a sleek, robust metal body, it’s built for both the intensity of live gigs and the precision of studio sessions. The metallic knobs are optimally weighted for effortless adjustments. Underneath its exterior, the opsix SE boasts an incredible capacity of 80 stereo voices of polyphony.

SE also comes a hard shell case

I have never seen a Japanese synth maker release a keyboard with aftertouch for less than $1999. The non-platinum SE is priced at this cutoff point. It is what it is.

My dream fm synth would be the Opsix  crisp, hifi, majestic in sound … maybe some more virtual analogue style OSCs (like, Saw HD VA and make the processor powerful enough so the manual does not have to lament about it.)

If collab, then with whoever did Schlappi Three Body … still talking from the sound perspective!

But the interface very much like the Hydrasynth (which is also a great FM synth), lots of endless encoders and little displays …
If faders, then please with light indicators … or motor faders :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh and at least four part multitimbral

Queued. Eleven minutes long.

Discussion from latest Sonic Talk. Yoad, Ty, Starsky Carr, Nick.

Basically four thumbs down.

Ideas in discussion. If they had released them in opposite order, high end synth first and low end later they would have been more successful. Keyboard players would have bought the high end first at the premium, and then everyone else would have bought the lower cost units, and the plugin later. The case is a waste for most people, really should be an option only. They like the synth, but don’t see this selling.

Hey all, did anyone use Opsix with microtonal scales (my favourite being 24et)?

Yeah makes sense really. Sell it as a cheap synth and then try and stick in a new case and sell as an expensive synth is never going to be the best approach. Sell it as an expensive synth with a cheap option later would sell better although arguably is less honest !!
Maybe korg took the moral high ground with this one

i played with an opsix at the guitar center last night and oh boy, im a believer. got lost in dinking around and had a moment where i actually had to snap myself back to reality and said ā€œwoah…thats sickā€

now i want one

So looks like I’ve lost the screws that connect the back panel to the enclosure when I started the chop6 project half an year ago and then had to put it on hold . Can someone please measure these screws?

Is there some way to see all operator levels at a glance?

Do you still need these measurements? I’m not really sure how to measure a screw, but I can try soon. My opsix is at a friend’s place, but it’s coming back soon. I’m going to be taking it apart to install the desktop mod (keyboard removal and new enclosure) so I’m sure I’ll have those screws handy.

Has anyone already received their Tall Dog desktop conversion/mod kits? It sounds like they’ve started to ship to some people.

I’m pretty stoked to get back into this synth because I’ll have room for it again once it’s a desktop synth. I might even look into some kind of Vesa arm after it’s in the new enclosure.

Thanks! Just the thread diameter and the length (excluding the cap).
