That’s funny, I was just looking for second hand KP3s! I didn’t find any in good shape though. I might get one of those Mini KP2s thingies and put it on an aux send or something
It’s black with the red squares on the screen.
You might be thinking of the KP Mini.
KP3 is the original third iteration of the Kaoss Pad, the KP3+ was the same but with some new algorithms. The yellow ones are Kaossilators, which are basically synths controlled with the touch screen. The synth algorithms are pretty cheesy but surprisingly fun. ![]()
The one I got was a bit battered but it works fine, they’re pretty tough. The last one I had years ago I got for super cheap because it was sold by a guitarist who listed it as a pedal. The mini KPs sound really decent! Only issue really is the bowl-shape of them and the fact they’re very light, which makes them a bit difficult to sit still. I used velcro and blu-tac on mine to keep it on a stand. ![]()
Sounds like a good solution to the shape. Did you find the lack of MIDI too limiting for tempo-synced effects?
Gorgeous! I’ve been interested in one for a while. Assuming the lack of MIDI isn’t an issue. Shame actually as a MIDI crossfader would tip me over the edge.
To be honest I didn’t notice as I wasn’t technical enough at the time to appreciate MIDI sync. ![]()
I bet it’s not a big deal to not have MIDI. Honestly, I’m a bit tired of everything being perfectly synced:)
Same, especially delays.
You’ll need a lot of 1/4" to RCA cables for that mixer.
Oh yeah, tempo-synced delay might as well just be sequenced sounds with descending volume. I like weird, wobbly unstable delays
The Kaoss pads are unique.
(I had mini and kp3, currently I own a kp3+ and quad)
Unfortunately there are always small problems:
kp mini is too quiet when connected to a mixer with “send-return”.
KP3(+) has problems with timing (midi)
Quad is fun, but has no midi.
Overall, the reverb algorithm is no longer up to date. But I find everything else usable.
Unfortunately, for each effect there is a different starting point on the touchscreen, where the original signal is untouched.
Unfortunately, you have to remember that.
…On the other hand, that doesn’t bother me because I always use the same 4 effects anyway. …And I can still remember four things…
Loop, switch to loop and filter away - transitions are really easy with a kp.
Or double the hihats (unfortunately you have to enter the speed manually)
For me most, not all of the frustrations of the kp3 seem to be addressed with the replay, but they lost the loop the slice/edit thing and the fx don’t seem any better or deeper.
Now that I have pulled out the kp3 again I see a way to route fx and more pads would be the game changer for me. I want to build layers of loops with fx baked in. Not silence all loops and resample the incoming audio. Or the sp404 style where you resample fx over and over to shape the sound with multiple fx, but this sucks live because you must stop the other loops and beat.
2x kp3 really sounds like the move! Especially at the $1k price tag of the replay.
I wonder if the release of the replay will cause prices on the kp3 to go up
Why would they?
Idk 2x kp3 = 2 sample group faders and 2x fx engines. At ~$500.
I had been waiting for a kp4, but at $1k I think im better off just picking up another kp3.
I got to spend 15 minutes playing on the Kaoss Replay at NAMM over the weekend, and, unexpectedly, I felt like I wanted one after 5 mins.
I’ve got an SP404mk2, an MPC Live 2, a Maschine+, had a Force, an Octatrack… and the Replay felt more performative and intuitive than all of them.
The two faders plus the Kaoss pad is great… and I can imagine having this at the end of a chain of devices for source material and getting lost for hours.
I’m now going to back track and see what people’s objections have been so far from the specs and watch some YT deep dives…
I have watched a few clips. It reminds me of the way people perform long sets on the sp 404 (sx). Because it resembles a sampler layout, some people may dismiss it as a sampler without a sequencer.
I think it looks great. Just needs to be £300 cheaper to tempt me
The XLR mic adapter making me nervous for that poor 1/4 jack!
Yes… and I could easily see having 2 of these either side of a DJ Mixer and it would be a blast. Then, in that context, it doesn’t seem expensive at all for what it is. Aren’t Pioneer CDJ’s $2500+?
I agree that relative to an SP404mk2 or MPC One it seems expensive, but I think there’s a feature set here that if/when it resonates with the people wanting the Replays specific feature set, the price won’t seem high.
V2 update released:
This does not look fun to use.
