(@RTFM thank you for your understanding, much appreciated)
Here is the picture that launched the discussion, I donāt caution it and reintroduce it only for the sake of the discussion.

Imagine the same pedal, but with a black curly hair and some typical racist āblack people attributesā. Would you be that proud of the joke?
Thatās how such sexist meme rings to me.
As a moderator, I just canāt allow this.
I was about to hide this, but Iād rather discuss this cause it bothers me deeply.
I could do this in private, but I do it publicly for everyone to understand.
I really donāt like people using that name as they do
My opinion is that, as this speaks to a specific type of personality, and not necessarily the color of their skin, itās ok (Iāve witnessed men be called Karen too). If there were a āChadā - overtly sensitive, aggressive distortion pedal - Iād probably buy it immediately based on name alone.
(Edit: God I wish I were proficient at photoshop right now. I have a reimagined RAT-font āCHADā pedal in my head with relevant setting ranges.)
I always thought taking the piss out of overprivileged babies was fair game. I am open to reconsideration.
Please do, because as a non native speaker I donāt get the sexism here. It could also be āKarl Speaker Managerā Right?
Imagine if your name was Karen ?
Ok thatās fair and itās probably difficult for Karens these days (I know only one Karen and she doesnāt mindā¦she thinks itās funny)
But @LyingDalai is asking specifically about the possible sexism.
Maybe my name is Karen.
Itās just a joke. And not a good one. I donāt see the sexism. Please elaborate.
itās not about the sex of the person in the meme - itās only about their antisocial attitude - there is a complementary generic set of names for the moaning Darens etc
Donāt see any issue here at all
I dunno.
I see how things like this can be seen as sexist, but I donāt think the intent is to denigrate women, just a subset of middle class western entitlement.
Also, we have to be careful of double standards.
I see a lot of stereotyping on here to do with people trying to paint certain harder styles of techno/electronic music as ābroā music (which is hilarious, given the proliferation of successful female artists in this area) which goes completely unnoticed by both mods and morality Police.
We should be careful of being hypersensitive to certain stereotypes if weāre going to be completely blind to other ones.
Dont see the sexism here ⦠but pretty sure to saw way worse regularly hereā¦
Itās gotten a lot better over the years, in no small part due to such conscious moderation.
Pretty sure to recently have read something along the line of » buy first, excuse later « speaking of the wife⦠recently and had been suprised. Not erased du to this subject sensituvity here
Oh I didnāt see that.
Still, if āthatās allā (and Iām not excusing it) thatās nothing compared to how it used to be.
Huh. Man Iām so out of touch with the world.
The button says ābring me the managerā
And the knobs say āRageā and āToneā and it has another knob ādont use that tone with meā
Speaker manager. Is the person wanting the manager Karen? Or is the manager Karen?
Makes no sense to me. I dont get it at all.
But then, I had no idea about the Karen meme as linked by @avantronica until I read the link.
So is it sexist? No. Is it stereotyping? No I dont think it is.
Iāll go back to my hermit cave now.
Haven`t know about this Karen Meme, too.
after reading the above and setting the pedal mockup in kontext, this could be thought of an Discrimination-Booster-Pedal?! Is this common ground of the critics?
Thatās also my take on it, and as was mentioned there are plenty of male equivalents, like chads etc.
Of course itās sexist! Thatās why ppl love it lol
All those stereotypes are there for channeling aggression (and sexually); doesnāt matter against who, race, sex, gender, nationality, religion⦠itās always against āothersā.
Society need to persist in using healthier ways to channel them, but itās hard sometimes. Historically it was done in a form of sports (watching it or doing it), sex, occupations (hitting things with a sledgehammer, cutting things, verbal and logical domination in a court, fixing things, creating things, helping othersā¦). Also, we used to have regular wars in which we would release some āevil bloodā. Ppl are progressively more unable to self-regulate their emotions (many factors but most notably early developmental problems related to relationship between a primary caregiver and a baby, our modern way of life, stress, lose of bigger families, mother being alone with a childā¦, later in life stress, unsatisfying place in society, loneliness, emotional problems, dependences⦠) and later in life those individuals are unable to channel their primal desires and needs, cant find their place in society and they become chronically frustrated and toxic. We all have this problem, but some manage to deal with it healthier than others.
Im all against stereotypes and related forms of aggression but we need a replacement for them. We need to focus on healthier choices! Letās make music for a change! Letās make love! (especially with Karens)
The way Iāve understood the Karen meme is that itās got everything to do with the insufferable behaviour of some individuals and basically nothing to do with gender.
To me it doesn“t seem like an attack on women or people named Karen but instead on unhinged sociopaths and control freaks. If we lose the ability to process these kind of matters through the humorous space I think we are in big trouble.
Haha, I am actually thinking more about a āinstant-mastering pluginā kind of thing.
You know, with the joke of the Chads being these kind of overly attractive and succesful guys ā and therefore pretty superficial and non-insightful about themselves.
Making spicy memes is a very nuanced art, isnāt it.
