Kanye’s Donda Stem Player

Like favorite? Or which sonic profile best represents you?

I thought the stem player was a cool idea in some ways. I fondly recall the official release of the Chronic 2001 instrumental tracks and it was fun to play with them in an amateurish way. I’ve largely checked out of Hotel Kanye since after the ones with the bear, though.

The linked article about is a great read - really highlights what happens when a Product is a “great idea” but is not appropriately specified, planned, has an underdeveloped business case and no long term support and development strategy.

The thing plays STEMs and they couldn’t even get original master STEMs from the original recordings.

They talked it up as a Platform, but no one else is on it.

Once they decide to shut down the Web portal, it will be a crippled device.

I wonder if TE removed themselves from the project as it looks like they had no issues developing it further into the TX-6. They may have identified some of these issues and taken the view that it would be harmful for them in the long run to be involved.

Isnt this just some real basic copycat stem seperating algorithm which we’ve had for years in a lot of vsts?

Pretty sure izotope have been doing this shit forever. Now Kayne has repackaged a shit version into a skin coloured egg and sold it.

The algorithm sounds terrible too.

Yes, it used Deezers splitter. They’ve since moved over to another open source splitter, without crediting it either

But for an official product, and the release of an album, you’d think they’d provide hi-res masters, even if they were wrapped in a layer of DRM.

These seemed to be sending out auto-split STEMs in MP3 format, repackaged as WAV files.

Ah you mean for the album tracks?
Yes. Agreed.

So they didn’t even bother splitting the album itself into 4 stem groups? Ha!

No. Apparently this is very clear on some tracks, including clipping.

The response was basically “you don’t always get STEMs from a producer. Is what it is.”

If this was my product, a key aspect of the scope would have been to design the album production around the delivery method, not as an afterthought.

Out of all the things that bother me about this device, the fact that it was apparently styled on a breast implant with surface controls is what bemuses me the most.

So I take you guys aren’t all becoming dual donda djs?

Kanye is a “big picture” guy who isn’t bothered by any of those “minor details”.

Haha yes, I’ve worked for them before. I see the pattern.
