Hey guys, first post here on Elektronauts, trying to find my way around here and be a good forum member - so bear with me
Anyways, I’m wondering if there are any cool people in the Florida area who make electronic music who would like to introduce me to the local scene or anyone who’d be interested in showing me their production process. I’ve been producing 100% ITB, but as I’ve been slowly acquiring hardware over the years and just jamming on them live, I’ve been ready to take the plunge into recording them now that I have a bit more time on my hands.
Anyways, if there any legit people here in Florida, let me know! I come from the middle of nowhere in VA, so I’ve never had any producer friends. I’m tired of living on the dark side of the moon lol.
P.S. I’m willing to commute to anyone who’d be cool enough to give me a hand!
I’m over on the Space Coast – the Melbourne area specifically. But I’m willing to drive anywhere since I’m kind of in the middle of the state and driving doesn’t bother me.
I’ve got some pretty cool gear I’ve built up from years of hard labor (I was a carpenter). My near term goals are to start playing live. I’ve been starting to produce full tracks this year after a year or so of dabbling. I’ve made a handful of songs that I actually like to come back and listen to. My near term goals are to keep upping my game producing records, but I want to start incorporating my hardware instead of only producing ITB. I also want to start going to open mics for electronic music and DJs and eventually start playing live gigs.
I’ve been a synth head for a decade, and I’ve managed to collect some cool gear along the way. I’ve got a Korg MS-20, a MKIII Arp Odyssey, a Blofeld, a Jupiter 6 and a Pulsar 23. For software, I love using Phaseplant and Zebra for synths and D16’s TR emulations. I’m also digging Tekno and Microtonic.
I’d totally be down to jam with others, meet a mentor, and eventually play live with others.
I truly love this stuff, so I seriously appreciate all of y’all willing to help me out!
pretty much every city had a scene back in the day but i left FL in the mid 90s and never looked back. but… orlando, gainseville and of course miami/ft lauderdale had pretty good clubs and local DJs. lot’s of DJs would come from abroad or wherever and play FL clubs and parties. the one place i know is cool that does community oriented type events recently closed… Gramps in Ft. Lauderdale. but there must be things happening in Orlando/tampa areas which wouldn’t be too far from the space coast. probably some generic info on reddit or simlar.
I know there’s stuff that happens in Miami and south miami centered around a record store there. Rom from soul oddity/Phoenecia and other oldschool miami heads spend some time there. he talks about some of iwhat’s currently going on there and loads of miami history in this interview,… i think Sweat Records still exists in Little Haiti.

I don’t know where I stand in the cool-o-meter, but I’m in Naples and have an Analog KEYS (I designed Underbridge, if you’re familiar with that), a Digitone II, a Digitakt OG, and a II coming in a couple days, and lastly, a Tonverk. i saw Billy Nasty there in 97 i think. he played hard techno. people were confused. i dug it. had a good chat w/him after his set.
Simon’s in gainesville could be a bit more adventurous w/the DJs they brought in. i still have some tapes of some of those nights. lot’s of early days… rave pianos, chipmunk voices, breaks… but also tribal house/techno that was pretty weird and all kinds of standard druggy FL progressive house. the rooftop was usually more experimental. i think first time i heard some Autechre remixes was on the rooftop at Simon’s. good times.
there used to be DnB in downtown orlando in the 90s too. but it was sporadic.
i have no idea what it’s like now. but i think there’s a lot of small bars and stuff that do little DJ nights for the regulars. i’m sure the old school night lives large in that town since it was imprinted so deeply on so many.
I’m happy to be headed back. It’s such a relaxed area and close to both coasts.
The downtown scene sadly recessed to edm/top40 and trap which is fine for many ppl but there was like one club that played underground music when I left. I don’t care as much anymore about going out even tho I produce house still.
I think my experience as a kid back in that old dance scene has stuck with me for life. It was a magical time.
@BassesAndPads Things unfortunately seem to be going that direction everywhere. But that will never stop me from working hard to bring good music to the area. That’s why I’m here!
My experience living here in Orlando has been anything but. Sprawling mess that functions in near constant spite of its actual residents. Still, I have my reasons for staying for the time being.
If you (or anyone else here) is on discord, I’m also Philroyjenkins there. One time when I was having a brew with @DonovanDwyer in Sanford (our halfway meeting point basically) we overheard some other nerds talking about some ensoniq gear or something.
We get to chatting and it turns out they do regular synth events here in O town. Worth scoping it out. There’s some decent local sales on the discord too sometimes.
Yeah the ppl in winter park could be insufferable. I lived there for 5 years. But I’m talking about the 90s when I needed a fake id to get into clubs. The scene got shut down by the mayor and she ruined the entire thing. It was one of the best electronic scenes in the country at the time. I saw some wild shit like DJ aoki doing lines off his vinyl while performing. Vinyl sets felt like rock n roll because mistakes could be made unlike today with usb sticks and auto sync.
