and I am impressed. If the FM synthesis turns out to be good (coming in a future update) it will be a tasty little machine.
Anyone got anything to say about the Nord Drum? Or any experience?

Sold my Drum 1 just before the Drum 2 was announced due to the lack of CC control and mono output. I can’t wait for the Drum 2! The sound will compliment the MD nicely
Think it will complement the DRM1 or any other analogue drum machine quite well too. When I demoed the nord it was next to a Korg Volca so I matched the levels and compared it with a 808 kick preset on the Nord, which sounded exactly the same once I matched the decay. The Nord sounded much better and far more powerful (Thats without even considering the difference in sound shaping possibilities).
I think I will actually prefer the kicks on the Nord to the machinedrum too. Maybe the nord being newer has the edge in some ways, dsp or hardware (ad conversion etc). The scope for creating variation through physical modelling algos and mapping parameters to velocity for further variation would be great.
I think it sounds fantastic and I like what they tried to do with the interface (in theory, at this point).
Super jealous of the tuned percussion.
It should play nice with any of the Elektron boxes. Even with “only” 4 cv outs on the analog 4 I’m sure it’d be fun to use to sequence the Nord Drum2.
i just got a nord drum 1, prices are crazy low right now.
this thing is fat as fuck, sounds great, it has all these abilities to make these in-between type drums… a kick with the attack of a hi hat and a metallic sound, with noise added…
all in all, it sounds great, it sounds very unique, i like it,
the limitations, ohh well, its not very expensive and makes up for it with me in other ways.
The Nord Drum would make a GREAT drum sample source for an Octatrack.
Hmm, and the first version is practically free. Damn, I think I’m gonna buy one!
I also had an eye on “Nord Drum” because the unit was very cheap but decided not to buy the unit and instead making my own “Nord Drum” with Nord Modular g1 rack.
i tried making the nord type drums on my g2, its not nearly as fun, the n d, i just tweak sounds and make nutty stuff, super phatt stuff,
the g2 drum oscs did have some advantages, effects, side-chain, the whole environment lends itself to creativity,
the nd does too, just in a very different way,
i would say it would be a great add on to a md or like me, an octa,
i made a few kicks using the nd that are wayyy too low ,they make a regular mix, sound like the bass cumming out of an urban type guys car at 3 am on a Tuesday…
anyone have a good electronic weirdo outside normal drum sounds demo of the nord drum 1 or 2? havent heard anything that wild out of it yet…
also, the FM stuff would be cool. looking forward to hearing some of that. whenever that sees the light of day
I picked up the ND2 and loving it so far. It sounds good with the A4! and works really well alongside the Vermona DRM1. The kicks and bass can definitely sound fat, but at the same time sound nice and tight in a way that analogue doesn’t. I sold my machinedrum so cant A/B compare but I think I prefer the sound of this to the MD!
It is very immediate and fun to program, but at the same time there is plenty of scope for designing sounds even without layering. There aren’t any lfo’s or modulation apart from a couple of velocity sensitive parameters.
Not much too experimental online demo-wise but check out soundcloud for more audio and this video sounds good too -
Anyone using a Nord Drum 2 as an expander for the MD? It’s still not available in Japan, where I live, but it looks like it might fill some gaps sound-wise, and now that the ND2 responds to CC data for all its parameters, you could p-lock it with the MD.
Here’s a vid featuring Nord Drum 2 with Nord Pad and iPad running the free Nord Beat app:
The Drum 2/Pad combo is high on my GAS list.
I use a ND1 as part of my electronic kit.
Really like the metallic, timpani type sounds I can get out of it.
I’m I I <-that close to pulling the trigger on a Nord Drum 2. I’d love to hear opinions from people using it, now that they’ve had their units for some time.
I have an OT and MnM, and a few effects, and my train of thought with the ND2 is to give the OT something to sequence over MIDI. That would give me more sonic variation with drums as opposed to just using samples – I love the expressiveness of ND settings.
At this stage, I’m no longer interested in buying something passable, that will do for now… It’s about searching for life mates
So OT+MnM+ND2 would basically be my rig, for polysynths I’d make use of VST’s. I absolutely need to keep my rig fairly simple, or else it’s just fiddling about and nothing gets done.
I’ve used a Nord Drum 1, so the basics are familiar to me. But I’d really be interested in thoughts concerning the longevity of the ND2. Do people still find use for it after months? Is it as expressive as it seems on the surface? Any disappointments sonically (crap claps, kicks lacking, etc.)?
Any problems with p-locking the parameters?
Thanks!
I’m agree with you all. It’s one of the first to think synthesis as layering parts and that’s sounding very nice. You can do exactly what you want and so FAST… it’s pure magic for the price. I really like it too. I have AR + Mbase11 + Mbrane11 + NordDrum2 and i’m very happy to this boxes for my Drums.
This puppy has been on my GAS list for a while. A lot of users on the MW forums seem to be happy sequencing it from their modulars, as the trigger inputs respond to CV. Of course every trigger input you use for the modular is one less input you can use for live drum playing.
Some stores offer a bundle deal in which you can get the Drum 2, the 6-pad unit, stand, and cables for the price of just the Drum 2 + pad controller.
I just brought my ND2 back to the store to trade in on a used XONE:4D. I would love to get another one someday - the iPad app is great and the sounds are varied and useful but with all the sample pack options in Ableton/Maschine and an incoming Octatrack the ND2 had to go…
… for now.
finally got mine and couldn’t be happier. I’m sequencing it from the OT. The sound is unreal. Only have to get my head around, when playing it chromatically, how the actual pitch responds to incoming notes (i.e. how to calibrate a patch/sound). hate to say, but sonically, it’s kinda like an MD and RYTM combined (and more). alas, minus the sequencers. But I’m sure a cunning combo of quneo(or such) and OT could help this.
I’m trying to get a nice hybrid of sequenced patterns and free drumming. would love to hear how people incorporate it into their set ups.
@tasmansea as long as you set the pitch/tone of the channel to 60 (C4) it will match the keyboard chromatically.
Both Nord drums match their pitch to midi note nos so it’s great, grab yourself a midi note to pitch chart like this…
