Just blew up my DT770s, some advice before I replace them

Just got a bit overexcited playing with my new Digitakt and turned the master volume up to full “by accident”.

After a lovely crackle sound that I’m sad I couldn’t sample, the left can is now dead.

I’ve had a quick look inside and established that it doesn’t work.

Before I buy another pair, is this related to any issues with the 770s, or have I just been silly/unlucky?

Yo, you can buy all spares there: Spare parts
And probably more specifically: System DT 770 series | beyerdynamic

It depends on your model but if you have the 32ohm version it’s probably easy to tear.
The heavy duty one is the 80ohm, as the technology differs between 32, 250 600ohm headsets and the 16 and 80ohm counterparts. As explained here and here:

The quick take: if you listen at high volume, go 80ohm.

Yea I have the 80ohm DT770 Pro’s and 250ohm 1770 Pro’s and they both go way way louder than I could ever tolerate - I feel like even with the 32ohm’s they have to support volumes that would exceed anything comfortable to listen to… maybe they’re more sensitive than I give them credit. Or your ears are made of some hard stuff Fin haha.

Is the Digitakt headphone out even that hot??

Sorry, been out in the car.

I’ll look at replacing the can, but it’ll probably end up costing more than a second hand pair off ebay.

Plus I’m not sure I’m up to soldering them tiny connections with the state of my hands atm.

Think I’ll go for the 80 ohms next time, these were 250s.

Hope your ears are ok.

They’re not, but they’re so blocked up it’s difficult to damage them more.

I’m a little confused here. A higher impedance measurement means the same voltage will give a lower sound by Ohm’s Law. So the 250 ohm cans should have been the most capable of dealing with a strong signal. As far as I can tell from the links above, the 80 ohm version is optimized for use in a loud environment. It doesn’t say anything about its increased ability to deal with strong signals. Am I missing something?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

So from what I can understand, the 80 ohm ones have different internals that make them a bit sturdier.

I don’t know, I’m just the idiot that broke them

I had the doctors office flush my ears out a few years ago, like a mega power wash. All this gunk came out and it felt and sounded like I was being born again or breaching the ocean surface like a humpback whale.

For three days every sound was alien to me. It was awesome. Need to go back for another earwax flush. It was almost better than drugs.

Almost. Very close.

I had to have grommets about 10 years ago cos my eustachian tubes are fucked. Same experience, only I could also blow smoke out of my ears.

Just heads up that I checked the specsheet and the power handling capacity is the same for all 3 of the DT770’s at 100 mW - so no point moving to a different impedance IMO if that’s the issue. That said lower impedance will give you ‘more’ from the same output, so if that’s what you need you might get a bit more volume before you blow them haha

However unless you’re playing in a club they really shouldn’t need to be that loud - they support volumes that exceed anything that’s safe for prolonged listening (sorry I know I’m not your mum).

The DT1770’s have a power handling capacity of 200mW but they’re a fair bit more expensive.

The one fucking time I turned up the fucking volume

Computer, headphones, not the car man!

I blew one side out after a month, I didn’t get the volume to crazy tbh.
But it clearly was for them.

With these you can buy/replace just the speaker.

I never did and I am in the market for a totally different pair, one that can handle frequencies and volumes better.
They can get loud enough for sure but I always have the urge to go “one louder” more bass etc.
Just for enjoyment jams vs seriousness : /
