I would prefer the system 8 in this regard. The interface looks much more inviting.
The green doesn’t unfortunately
This may sound petty, and believe me I don’t mean it in that way at all but I never got on with how the hydrasynth actually looks. I think it sounds great, is priced right and can cover lots of ground but somehow I feel like because I don’t think I like the look of it, I wouldn’t feel inclined to use it much. I appreciate your input and honestly this one is one on my list that I’ve constantly struggled with (only due to looks) lol
I know, before I get roasted - it’s silly but it is the way it is.
not silly at all
Regarding with the sound of the OB6 I feel the same, every time I watch a YT video comparing it to something similar - I always come out feeling like the OB6 has so much character and idk - just sounds fantastic to my ears. I understand that it is not the “do everything” synth as well and realize that it’s pretty expensive for what it does.
I guess what I’m looking for here is go see what other options people love and maybe get convinced “out of it” lol.
We’ll see.
Also, regarding the “if you slim down” what WOULD you keep
it would also be helpful to know which types of sounds you’re looking for most?
pads? leads? atmospheres? etc.
I feel like I have the leads, basses, arps and those types of sounds covered. I’m looking for more in the pads category, also atmospheres. I already know I won’t get SUPER deep into complex sound design (Waldorf Iridium - I’m talking to you) so as much versatility as something like that has, I already know it’ll be “too complicated” for me to really really enjoy. I actually have also tossed around the idea of the Waldorf Kyra as I honestly find the sounds it produces to be pretty awesome and I think it would pair excellently with the Octatrack (8 midi tracks to its multitimbrality).
At the end of the day I “don’t need any synth” as lots of the sounds I am looking for I can get from my softsynths, but as I stated before, I’ve been thinking about the OB6 for its character and am wondering if it’s worth it (or if it’s worth picking up something else that I know I will use). I put the 2500 limit on myself as I don’t want to get carried away and definitely don’t need to spend that much on something.
Hope this helps.
sounds lovely!
I’d second a couple of the mentions of the Summit. A few months ago I was in the same boat, and after listening to lots of demos and getting advice here, I narrowed things down to the Summit, Udo, and Polybrute. In the end I went with the Summit because the Polybrute was still an unreleased and unknown quantity, and also because I was able to get a brand new Summit for around $1900 before tax (significantly less than the other options). IMO it’s the best value right now in a “modern” poly, and the digital filters oscillators don’t bother me at all.
I’m very happy with my choice–it’s a very deep synth that can do lots of things well–but I did end up getting a Pro 3 to add some additional mono analog goodness.
Edit: I should add that while the Summit is my “main” poly, I do also have a couple of digital polys that support it (a DN and a Kawai K5000).
Filters are Analogue, Oscillators are Digital.
I should not have used the word “best” although I qualified it by saying : “best for you”
I do agree that there is no best.
D’oh–I should have had more coffee this am…!
good choice for an allrounder I suppose.
Great interface.
Can only speak for myself but I feel OP has similar thoughts. Does something like the A1 make a difference to the great softsynths I have at hand? Wouldn’t the luxury analog poly be the real game changer?
But does it change the game enough, to justify this crazy amount of money
My answer to me always was. Your tracks won’t get better with it…
But come back to that question over and over.
Always wondering how special it could be
Might directly lead here
Sorry got carried away with my own poly thoughts…
I am very familiar with that thread you linked here… and I do agree on all your points - but just to be clear here, I am not expecting my tracks to change overnight and that is OK - what I am really looking for is something that speaks to me in such a way that I know I will enjoy using and that it fills a void in my current hardware setup.
To that end there are great suggestions here - and like I said originally, I don’t mind/care if they are all analog or all digital or any combination of them.
At the end of the day I think we are all truly lucky and living in a great time to be making music
Like you say, great interface! IMO interface is everything. Or else we’d all be on computers.
I gotta say, the A1 sounds more lush and “analog” in the traditional sense than my actual analog Roland MKS-70 (aka bitimbral JX8P rack). A lot of that comes down to the Roland’s DCOs, but many modern V/As (and plugins) are modeling the quirks of VCOs.
I think it comes down to sound + interface immediacy. I’ve tried the route of using my Pro 2 to control Repro-5. Great sound, but the interface isn’t as ideal as a hardware poly synth.
How the sound is achieved, through bits vs volts, in 2021 is less consequential than ever.
Probably the OB6. Until the Yamaha CS80 reissue from Behringer im not dipping my toes into the pond again.
very true.
Piggybacking on @jemmons sentiment… the Micromonsta 2 has completely thwarted my want or need for any of the coveted prophet synths I’ve always had an eye on. I’ve been doing A/B sound comparisons with mm2 and my neighbors p12… the results lead me here to write this, and my neighbor is now trying to find a mm2 in the wild so he doesn’t have to wait for the next batch (or next time I come over).
any clips of note that you’d refer to?
