Forgive me if there’s another thread out there but I don’t think there is. I’ve seen this in online shops with a “coming soon” on it, looks like as of this morning it’s available:
Yeah, it looks like it’s finally out at some retailers as well. I was always curious about the first one but never had a chance to try it out and there aren’t a lot of demo’s out there.
Gave a quick looks through the manual. It has a robust midi/cv implementation but interestingly the sequencer appears to only apply to the 3 filter controls and not the effects or lfos.
I like the aesthetics. It does take up a lot of desktop real estate.
It has some other FX inside too which aren’t mentioned too much. It seems like a Sherman Filterbank on steroids, but maybe not as gritty/noisy - the Sherman is a feedback monster. I want to get a Moonwind MkII into the studio and try it out. The 6 assignable CVs would be really fun with other CV gear. Maybe have the Iridium or Hydrasynth trigger something, or vice-versa. I agree about the size though. Bigger screen, smaller everything else is how I would’ve gone.
The fx look cool (formant stuff is always interesting) but they are pretty limited. With the two lfos, envelopes, and sequencer it would be cool to have some kind of mod matrix with the effects parameters as destinations but all of the modulation is self contained with the filters.
Sequenced filters are great though. The original desktop evolver and the analog four are also great for this kind of stuff.
Anyone found any documentation (or footage) about the DSP effects built in? This looks like a bit of a Sherman crossed with Analog Heat+FX keen to see how the two compare.
OK, I took the plunge and bought this. I’m still trying to figure it out because it’s kind of complicated. I haven’t owned any Jomox gear before but I know that’s kind of how they roll. Updated the firmware, then I had to contact their support because I think it deletes the presets in the process and you have to reload them afterwards. (The presets were right on the Moonwind web page I just had to grab them there and put them on using SySex Librarian lol)
The sequencer is fun. You can just run your fingers on the touch pad and it’ll record the gestures. X/Y can be different parameters, like move your finger up and to the left and you’re controlling the cutoff/resonance of the left side for some weird stereo effects. You can get creative.
This is an effect you should read the manual while using. When I bought this there really wasn’t anything online as far as walkthrough videos go. I might just make one myself if that’s the case.
Would love to hear more demos! There’s a few audio demos on the Modwiggler thread on this device, but there’s frustratingly little stuff out there to get a sense of what this unit can actually do.
I have recorded a long-ish video showing everything I’ve learned through the manual so far. I’ll upload it tonight. It’s actually the third time I shot that video - the first time I didn’t record any audio, the second time OBS recorded the dry signal along with the effect so everything was doubled and awful. This third one the only problem is my mic is a bit low. But it’ll be fine, I’m not loopop or anything.
I also noticed this morning that since I started using it that there’s been 2 new firmware updates, which might tighten up some of the issues I was having.
Some issues are (at least with OS 1.0.5, haven’t tried 1.0.7 or 1.0.8 yet):
a jump in gain when you first move the dry/wet knob from 100% wet. The dry signal kind of comes in a bit loud to start.
feedback level follows from FX preset to FX preset - so if you have a delay with feedback set to 100 and switch to the next effect, say a bit crusher, the feedback absolutely howls when you press the button to change it so you have to be mindful there.
the touchpad is…less than reliable for changing parameters (kind of jumps all over the place and not clear which parameter you’re changing) - leads to inadvertent changing of the neighbor parameters and struggling to say, get them to 0 instead of 4 or worse - one of them is the feedback function so you could inadvertently raise feedback when trying to change the adjacent parameter like pingpong
entering and exiting touch mode should be a double-tap on the touch pad. It only does this from a certain screen.
Once you’re in touch mode, you should be able to double-tap in the bottom right corner of the touchpad to exit the mode. It works, but if you don’t nail this by hitting exactly where and how it wants it adjusts the filter parameters to where your finger is (bottom right means right filter cutoff open but Q and resonance are all the way down). So in short trying to exit touch mode this way is very tricky, but you can exit touch mode by hitting the Single/SEQ button instead.
pingpong didn’t seem to do anything stereo-wise, or really have any affect
when you update the OS, it needs the RAM to cache the update before it deploys. This means it wipes all presets and sequences. The manual and update process explicitly state this so it’s not a surprise or anything, but I definitely wiped all the preset sequences by mistake.
Apologies if the drum loops I used get a little annoying. I’ll probably make another when I figure out the rest of the functions (like the sequencer and CV) and update the firmware to the latest.
I got my Moonwind mk2 today and I’m noticing a delay of the audible frequency change when turning the cutoff knobs (about 1sec latency).
This happens in every preset so I think it’s not a slew rate you can specify.
Is this normal behaviour?
I don’t have that behavior - but I’m controlling the device almost entirely via MIDI now since the menus are a bit hard to get around. Having everything mapped to a controller makes things a lot easier in my case. I was playing with it last night and any changes I made were instant. Check your OS version, I think the latest is still 1.0.8. I don’t know if they announce new versions anywhere but on their website. I think they’re a small operation so reaching out to their support will probably get the best results.
These are great!
I’ve been meaning to share something I made a little while back - I’ve mapped everything to the Electra One MkII which really enhances everything since everything with a MIDI CC is instantly controllable without any menu diving on the Moonwind. I’ll share later today.
This is an in-depth video on how I’ve been setting up my instruments/pedals/MIDI gear in my studio using the Jomox Moonwind MkII as an example (sorry if the bassline gets annoying):
I got one from Three Wave. This thing is sick! It’s so deep. There’s really so much to it. If you’re DAWless and need something like the soundtoys filter this is it. Took me a day to go through the manual, configure midi and learn the various functions.
Like all Jomox gear I’ve owned it’s a little finicky but here’s what I feel immediately is that Jurgen understands how dance and electronic and experimental musicians want to play It’s musical and fun and organic I guess I’d say compared to Elektron’s clinical nature.
It’s a keeper for me. I need to update the OS as it came with the first version so I can’t speak for the latest OS.
